Help plz

So here's my problem I'm about to buy another fc jus that it's auto and this one has a blown torque converter and something with the first gears well I'm wondering if by starting the engine destroy the engine They guy I'm buyin from doesn't want me to start it that it may ruin the car I want to start it so I could find out if it actually works

So my question is could starting the car under these circumstances really destroy the engine I don't mind about the tranny gonna get it replaced but could starting it really do damage to the engine
Btw it's a s4 na

It shouldn't be a problem if you start it in park or better yet neutral to make sure it is internally disconnected from the motor. Nothing should happen to the motor since it wouldn't be engaged to the trans. Worst case scenario is that it is engaged to a gear and it either takes off or it stalls. You have to start it before you buy it though.. what if it shoots a lot of smoke during start up and now you're stuck with not only a bad trans but also a blown motor. Good luck.
