help...new motor broke and may not be under warranty...

ok, here's the problem...

i bought a rebuild engine and while driving home one night (still in the "break in" mode) the engine sputtered and lost power as i got within 1 mile of home...anyway, when i did a compression check, the numbers read:

front rotor: 100-100-0
rear rotor: 100-100-100

so i'm thinking ok, side seal is gone...engine is still under warranty...so i took it up to the place where i got the engine from and now they're telling me it may not be covered under warranty cause supposedly there's some marks on the rotor....anyway, what's the scoop on the side seal, how can it just "break" off? what causes it? or how can i get just a 100-100-0 compression reading? let me know...

thanks....

Who rebuilt it? What were the watrrenty terms? IE, did you need to flush rad, oil cooler, new waterpump etc. Did you Do all that?? Do you have the neccasary proof to back it up?

There are only a couple of ways to get a 100-100-0. You could have burned a hole in the rotor face, or lost a side seal.

I really cant see a side seal breaking really. When the engine is compressed (tension bolts installed) the side seals sit 90% of their depth inside the rotor...leaving only 1mm at most exposed to do the sealing. In fact, many core motors I get have rusted up inside, and the seals are locked in place just as they were positioned inside the engine. The corner and side seals are all but flush with the rotor sides.

That said, I cant really offer any other suggestions. Before I would say broken side seal, Id say broken corner seal, which I could see happening shortly after installation. Doesnt make a lot of sense though. Id be interested to see what was inside that.

As for warranty, I guess you need to refer to whatever documentation you recieved with your new engine. Without documentation both of what they agreed to warranty and what you were required to do to maintain that warranty, you'll be in for a ride to get something done, unless theyre nice guys...

I have only ever had one rebuild fail, on installation, which was done by the customer without my presence, and anything could have happened to it that way, but I still drove 4 hours to his place and re-rebuilt it with him and helped install it.
