Help! my engine surging and won't pass 2K rpm

This happen to me a few times, but today it was pretty bad. When i start the engine, it idle as normal, but when you press on the gas padel, the rpm rev up to 2K and drop down to 1K, and go up again. It sounds like this - Zoom...(2K).....po po po (1K).....zoom...(2K)....po po po down to 1K. And the car won't run!

The worst thing is that i comes and goes, can't fiture out why it does that. When i doesnt' do that, the car runs perfect, just sometimes when you start the engine it does that. Normally i can just restart the engine and it will go away, but not today. As I was runing in the mountains, the engine surging all of the sudden, so i had to pull aside and see what's going on. For 20 min, no matter what i do, the engine just won't rev. Lucky after endless try, the car rev again, so I drove down the mountain immediately. For 40min, it run fine. Until I pull into a restaurant and had lunch, when i came out, the car does that again. It scared me so bad that i went straight home.

oh, and when the car surges like that, i smell gasoline in the car, but didn't smell anything in the engine bay, must came from the exhaust or something.....

Does anyone expeirence this before? What could be causing this? The only mod to the engine i have done is K&N cone filter (airbox gone) and racing beat exhaust.....

Please help me, I don't feel safe driving this car anymore until i can pin point what's going on. Thannks.

Its probably your TPS. Disconnect it and see if the car runs better, it should.

I had the same exact problem, it was so bad I couldn't drive it until it was good and hot. A spec switched the temp sensor and it runs good as new. Good luck!
