what does it mean when all i my gears work but my reverse doesn't ? i can shift 1 through 5 with out a problem. but i can't shift into reverse. i currently have a 91 gxl with 148k.

 

It means your reverse is fucked

 

It could be something as simple as a stuck interlock pin, but either way you have to pull & dissembled it to fix it.

Look up you tranny in the manual to see where the selector rod interlocks are.

Try shifting into 5th before shifting into reverse. I have to do that in my 'vert.

synchro maybe ... shouldnt cost you more than 500 to get it rebuilt

 

all i do is go from 4th to reverse, i go it in my honda and my RX7, dunno why it happens but it prevents a little grind and goes in nicely....

Is your car an S5? I am wondering, because one car I have (the S5 'vert) does that but the other (the S4 GXL) does not do it. So I'm wondering if it has to do with the S4 or S5 tranny, or both.

 

there is no synchro for reverse, i am used to putting it into first then into reverse, works fine for me. the clutch drags a little so what you are doing is using a synchro gear (any forward gear has synchros) to stop the input shaft from spinning then it will slide into reverse without grinding.

 

 

yes mine is an s5 it is a 91 gxl. so far the shifting into 5 and then reverse seem to work for me fine right now. i plan on doing a complete swap soon. i'm not gonna go turbo because i don't know much about them. i am currently in the market looking for another low mileage base engine and a transmission. i plan to monster street port it .
