Help me diagnose--Bad water pump+long drive+fresh rebuild=power to 1 rotor
Yooooo. Here's my problem. I just rebuilt my engine, fresh everything. All new seals, o-rings, springs, even oil control rings, gaskets, etc. This was finished and put together the night before an event. I did a little bit of town driving for about a half hour just to make sure everything was OK and there were no obvious problems. The only prob I was having was a small leak from the front of the water pump through the weep hole. I didn't see exactly where it was coming from, just that I had a leak from the area, I figured it was a bad wp housing, so I tracked one down and replaced the one I had before I started everything up. Still had a small leak which at that point i noticed was coming out of the front of the water pump. I didn't have the time or resources to track down a new pump that night, I figured the leak was small enough not to give me any problems. Anyways after the little drive I did that night I figured I was okay to drive up to the event at Willow Springs in the morning, just to watch my temperature gauge and make sure I had plenty of coolant on me for the day to make sure I had plenty.
So I leave in the morning, about 30 minutes up the road I was going up a hill and noticed a gradual loss of power. I had been cruising about 70-75 the whole time, and was watching my temperature gauge like a hawk, up to this point, I just started to lose speed. Couldn't hang in 5th gear so I downshifted thinking maybe it was just the hill. In fourth gear I began to lose power more quickly as my RPMs quickly fell even though I gave it more throttle. So I just drop it into neutral and pull over to the shoulder, right when I drop it into neutral the engine dies. Also, I look at my temperature gauge as I am pulling over and my temp is going up slightly as I am getting over, by the time I get to the shoulder it's at about 75-85%.
I pop the hood, I can tell it's hot as I have some steam coming from the radiator cap as I relieve pressure, I also have a bit of white smoke seeping out of the little nipple near the oil fill cap. I have no idea what that means. Anyways I have it towed home and I didn't have a chance to look at it til today.
It started up pretty quickly, but was pretty obviously running on only one rotor based on the sound. I didn't have any smoke on startup or after letting it idle with the assistance of a little bit of throttle, no smoke at all. My exhaust does smell pretty strongly of gasoline, though. Does anybody have any better ideas than me of where to start? I really doubt that I blew a water seal, although I realize it's a possibility, but I didn't have any smoking problems, and I know my walbro pump is pumping and getting plenty of fuel pressure to the engine. I think it may have been flooded with gas from me trying to start it on the side of the road that morning it broke down, which is the reason for the flooding. After idling for about 10-15 seconds though the motor still was only running on one rotor, and I started it a second time after it died with the same results. I hope someone knows exactly what the problem is based on these details haha so let me know. I really hope I don't have to tear the block apart again, I'm confident that I rebuilt it correctly. Any ideas? Thank you for reading,
Brad
