You can always look in the archive for good info, and there is alot of info to post, ill do some for you here:

The mazda rx7 was first imported into the united states in 1978 (model year 1979) Mazda had begun developing the mazda rx7 many years before it reached the shores of of the us. It introduced the rotary powerplant in the mazda r-100 adn 1971 rx-2. The engine got its start in the early 1950's with a german company whose primary focus was manufacturing motorcycles. NSU (Necharsulmer Strickmachinen Union) was the first comopany to enter into an agreemant with Felix wankel to help develop his dream of a rotary powerplant. His first task at NSU however was to develop a supercharger for a 500cc engine that NSU would use to set a new speed record for motorcycles. His resulting creation was a belt-driven rotay compressor that, when added to the 500ccc engine boosted its performance eightfold. He went on to improve on that basic design, and by 1954 a crude version of a rotary internal combustion engine was born.

X605 project car: Toyo Koygo had been planning a two seater soprts car since that late 1960's but the opec oil crisis and resulting mazda usa woes buried the roject untill 1973. mazda needed a solution for its falling sales in the united states after a trip to the states in 1975, mazda manaement became convinced that the way to save the rotary engine was to produce an aggordable and competent sports car.

The first generation: When the first eneration hit the shores in late 1978 it was an instant hit. In just the rx7s first two years US sales exceeded all rotary powered cars to date. Alot of the dealerships were selling the cars for over 2000 dollars above sticker price and had long waiting lists. Part of the reason for this was the rx-7s low price compared to the competition. Even if you paid that extra cash you would still be saving money overa porshe 924 or datsun 280z. You would also be able to blow there doors off if you choose to challenge them at a red light. The intitial offering sold for less than 7000 and included both the base model and the GS. You could select a four-speed, five speed, or a three speed auto. In 1984 mazda released the gsl-se. Mazda chose to enlargen the combustion chambers and widen the block by 10mm. This resulted in 1308cc of total displacement.

In 1986 sports car enthusiasts were treated to a new rx7. Although the first generation was canged considerably during its final two years of production (GSL-SE) major car magazines were referring to the old look as being stale. Mazda had been working on the new body since 1981. THe second generation was more civilized, and had more power. nearly a completly different car from the 1g, the 1986-1992 Rx-7 was designed to compete with the porshe 924 for a share of the U.S. market. The shape of the new rx shows that this car spent some time in the wind tunnel. The suspension was completly redesigned, including a pseudo four-wheel steering system built into the rear suspension. THe DTSS (dynamic Tracking suspension system) maintained negative camber in the rear, even during hard cornering. A special front bushing design induced toe in when g-force was applied. The reciprocating ball steering was finally replaced by rack and pinion, giving the second generation drivers a much better feel for the road. The engine was also updated. Newly designed apex seals to replace the olderones, and the oil injection system was redesigned. Now it would be squirted directly into the primary intake manifold and the trochoidal chamber. In 1986 U.S. responded to the new rx, making it the best selling car with more than 56,000 units sold in the us alone.

Mazda had chosen to release many different modlels of the rx7 during these years. In 1986 there was just the basic rx-7 and the gxl. In 1988 however the se (new name of the base model), GTU and GXl was an attempt to lure the luxury sports car buyer to the rotary life style. And in 1988 there was a 10th anniversary edition produced celebrating the rx-7s 10th year in the united states.

The turbo car was the car that rx7 fans had been waiting for. The engine that powered the energetic car was designated the turbo II. With over 180hp on tap, this car could really fly. It was however really thirsty. Even without the turbo this car was a true sports car. The suspension was stiffer, the wheels and tires were bigger, and just like on the GTU, a limited slip differential was standard to get all the hp to the pavement.

Mazda fans had a great year in 1988, and it got only better when mazda released the cabriolet. The only downside of the convertible was that japan kept the best power plant to itself. To avoid a "gas guzzler" tax in the U.S. we could only buy the se enginemated to a five speed tranny. In japan, the cabriolet came with the TurboII engine, with a choice of five-speed, or auto trannys.
