WV Help installing turbine end piston ring

S5T2. I can not get the turbine end piston ring to seat. I have searched and this is what I found:

Reinstall turbine shaft:
Replace the piston ring on the end of the turbine shaft, and reinstall. Lube the bearings up with some oil, and press/rotate the shaft back in. Getting the piston ring to compress again is not easy.

But, the piston ring will not go back in place. Should I press/rotate by hand or should I be using mechanical help, I don't want to crack the ring.

thanks

I use external snap ring pliers to help it just enough to get in the proper groove.

I did use snap ring pliers to get the ring on the shaft but now I can't get the shaft and ring back into the center housing. It seems that the piston ring must be compressed to get it back into the housing.

Lube the piston seal and tap the turbine into the housing with a soft hammer.

Thanks, that worked. I had already oiled the ring but I was concerned about tapping it with a hammer, I thought the ring would break off.
Now I need to find a shop to balance it.

For reference, all I do is place the the turbine wheel end against a bench (shaft vertical), rotate and press the CHRA down. The ring will pop right into place.

Nah, there's a slight taper that compresses the ring, just takes a bit of force to compress the ring so that it can slide into place.

Thanks for the info.
I have another one to rebuild so I'll give your method a try. Before I decided to rebuild the turbo on my 7, I purchased a OEM unit on here. I was told it was low mileage with minimal shaft play but it probably wasn't. The o-ring on the CHRA had disintegrated in a couple of places, the journal bearings were worn and the oil return port was mostly gummed over. The guy I bought it from was probably told that it was low mileage also.
