So, if I'm inferring correctly, you bought a cone fillter, removed everything connected to "the big hose" and then just attached the cone filter to the black hose?

Edit: I'm going to jump to the conclusion that you removed everything including the MAF (air flow sensor). You need to remove it from the air box and put it inbetween your filter and "the big hose". Of course, I hope I am just jumping to conclusions, but I don't want to see a new owner do something they will regret.

Now if I'm right have a look at the picture. See the yellow arrow pointing to the yellow circle? The circled area is the MAF, the original place where the "wiring" what connected to. You need this!!!

When I had the airpump briefly after I purchased my car, I just put a breather on it.

You'll need to get an adapter plate so that the new cone filter will mate up to the AFM.

Gimme a min and I'll find one...

Ok, here's the adapter plate you will need. This one is from rx7.com, but you can find a much better deal on eBay.

And you can use this "breather" to put on the end of the air inlet tube that goes to the airpump. This is probably better as an eBay buy also.
