It's "normal".
Yes, you can just pop it back in.

You might want to check (and/or change) the fluid level.

IF this happens while the car is in normal operation, you should replace the metal pin/ring on the end of the stub shaft, which is what holds it into place inside the diff. Its job is to hold the shaft in place normally, but compress and let the shaft slide out when you pull/pry outward. I've seen high mileage cars/diffs that the stub shafts would just fall right out of during removal, but they pretty much stayed in place while driving. Still, it'd make me damn nervous, especially if I was putting down some power to the wheels...so I'd replace those pins if the shafts are loose, or simly get lower mile/new stub shafts.

The shaft can't come out under normal driving or even hard driving because the axle and CV's are almost totally compressed. It might move enough to come off the seal surface but I even doubt that.

No, it can't come totally out, but it can slide side to side as torque is applied both on accel and decel...this would let fluid out and cause wear to the splines on the shaft/diff as well as the CV joint itself.

One time I had a FWD celica and the long driveaxle came out of the trans while driving...the 2 bolts that hold the carrier bearing to the engine block had come out at some point. I couldn't make it a couple miles before the axle would be driven out of the trans/splines again. The torque of driving will cause the axle to slide around, if the pin in question is not strong enough to lock it in place.
