Help, fuel tank opening size/pump fitment?
Ok I just purchashed an 87 pump off a guy and I go to put it in my 88 rx7 thinking that they would be the same but they aren't. The 87 pump has a bigger mounting plate for the unit that my 88 pump and is too big to mount in my tank. My fault. What are the differences here and since I have this can I buy an 87 tank since mine is farely rusted instead of buying an 88 tank and another pump for an 88? Will the 87 tank bolt right up and fit. Please help. I just waited 3 weeks for this pump and I'm frustrated.
Also if anyone has one I need an 87 tank (if it works)

Hmm, i realy don't know how different a fuel tank can be from an S4 to an S5... Best bet is to try to order a brand new tank from mazda for the pump you already have, and know you have a clean pump/ no gunk floating around in there... Maybe someone else has a clue? Good luck.
EDIT: they will probably let you "return" it if you come back and say "this is the wrong part" or something. (if it does not fit, that is)

Are you saying that the plate that screws to the top of the fuel tank is bigger in size?
Are the actual fuel pumps the same size? I would think they are. Take the actual fuel pump off the new one and swap out in the stock hardware...if I understand your email.
The outside of your tank may look shitty, but everything could be hunky dory inside. I once had to remove a gas tank while swapping a transfer case on my old 79 Ford pickup and never, ever got it running again.
if you were able to get the rusty, shitty little screws out and pull the fuel pump assemblage, you got most people beat. Swap the actual pump and put the stock assembly back in.

well the problem I see is that when the 87 pump fits in, the level and pickup both go diagonally to the left and would hit the side of the tank if I were to maintain the outlet and inlet facing forward. I will post a few pics here in a second. I have a Mazda number for the pump that's on the sticker: B61P and 196100-?000. Also this is a Canadian pump. Does this make a difference?

Based on what that old pump looks like, you should have the tank removed and cleaned, that is worse than mine was.
The part # for that appears to me from a miata. B61P shows up all sorts of miata things on google.

wow, that is one dirrrrrty fuel pump.... i agree with the monkey. Clean out the old tank and if you are worried over rust then you could sand the exterior (plug up all the holes so nothing gets inside) and clean and paint it to prevent any further rust/ corrosion. I used black underliner paint and it's been holding up pretty well for a year now. About the new pump.... that certainly isn't the right pump mount for the tank, but maybe the sock and pump motor can be swapped to your old one as mentioned before. Goodluck man.
