HELP! engine start button
HELP! engine start button
ok i just picked up an engine start button today and im having trouble with the wiring since im not good at reading wiring diagrams. on the instructions that came with the button it says i need 3 wires, a constant 12v line, the IGN. (12v when key is on), and the starter wire. what colors are those three? i need help asap cause i cant get my car started now...
... if you check a honda forum, they'll know (thats a cheap blow btw if you couldn't tell),. Coincidentaly, 12v are SAE yellow, IGN is SAE Red, and obviously black is SAE ground. That said, we hardly drive a car with standard wiring, lol. So those wire colors don't apply.
Constant? Run one.
Ignition? Pull it off the starter, or catch it inline from the starter to the original key clylinder. The ignition wire is the wire on the starter that doesn't come from the battery. That was hard huh?
Ground? Run one.
That said. Compentence runs marathons. Learn to read wiring diagrams if you plan to install something like this. If you don't feel up to it, have someone else that can read diagrams do it. Otherwise you're going to end up with a car that doesn't start. And seeing how this is an rx-7... every wire you touch has the potential to **** the rest of the car. I know :P
Go get some decent competence, confidence, and a $20 multimeter and you'll never ask a "what color is this wire" question again.

ya dude make sure you test it all with a MM before you do anything LoL... I about killed myself with the starter on one of mine yesterday...
And the wire he's talkin about on the starter is the solenoid. It gets power when you push the start button. You get
12v+--------Button---Starter solenoid
Gnd-----------|
The +12v completes a circuit to the starter solenoid when you push the button, therefore telling the solenoid to GO, and since the starter has constant power it starts turning. The ground is a safety measure and you can ground it ANYWHERE on the chassis.

well i wanted to know what color the wire was off the ignition. i didnt want to have to run new lines from the engine bay cause i already have a couple, and i didnt want to have to drill new holes or spend the time looking for a place to run them through the firewall.
Just exactly do you want the starter button to do for you? Do you want to turn the key to the ON position, then press the new start button to start the car? If that is the case I see no reason for three wires. You only need two wires. One wire would be the wire off the clutch interlock switch (black/white), that goes to the starters solenoid, and the other wire would be any 12v wire off the battery bus. For the 12v you can tap that off the BLACK wire on the starter switch connector located about a foot from the ignition switch. Press the button to make the circuit and the starter should turn over.
There are three connectors for the ignition switch and they are located about a foot below the ignition. The black wire is all by itself. It is a single wire connector.
The clutch interlock switch is .........on the clutch pedal. Just find the switch on the pedal and trace its wiring back to its connector. Two wires. One is black/white. That is the one that goes to the starter. It goes directly to the starter UNLESS you have theft proteciton. I trust your smart enough not to have theft protection.

i wanted it to be so that i didnt even need the key at all, but then i started thinking about it and realised thats not possible because the steering column will lock without the key. Is there a way to make it so that i can just start the car with no key at all and just the button? i dont care about about having the acc option i just dont want to have to need a key.

Don't wanna use a key. Oh well. That's just a little more difficult. You would have to disable the device that locks the steering wheel. That's not that easy. You'd have to remove the ignition switch and I THINK grind off the lug that drops into a groove on the column. Sorry, I'm not that familiar with that. To remove a ignition switch once, I found that the screws that hold it on the coumn have no slot for a screw driver. What I did in that case was grind a slot on each screw head with a dremel grinder and then unscrew them. That was on a 82 car. I havn't looked at my series four. No help here. Maybe someone else.
i have a question about this same sorta thing so instead of making another thread, ill try getting it answered in this one.
i was thinking of wiring a switch for the positive wire to the ignition and hiding the switch somewhere in the car. i was thinking this would keap the car from being stolen if someone just tried to stick those key things in the ignition and turning it like a normal ignition. would this work or no?
how similiar is a car ignition (only where the key goes, not the whole system) to an ignition like on a 2 stroke boat engine, because ive hooked one of those up and its pretty simple.

i already have a switch like that in mine and its REALLY simple. on your ignition look for a black wire with a red stripe cut that wire and put a switch inline. the car wont start unless you flip the switch on. it took me about 5 mins to do.
