your ok. the oil pickup tube has a screen in it that wont let big **** through. plus... i doubt it floats, so it will just sink to the bottom. your fine.

If you're really worried about it, get yourself at the very least some RTV. A new oil pan gasket at the most. Or if you want to put one of those oil pan braces or baffles get those too.

Jack the motor up by the trans. Unbolt the motor mount that is at the bottom of the oil pan. Remove all the oil pan bolts + get that plastic out. Drain the oil first of course. Then use the RTV on the oil pan, or put a new gasket on. You might have to GENTLY pry the oil pan off with a small flat bar or something similar. Make sure you don't put enough force on it to bend the oil pan. Then you're pretty much fucked.

Temps in the oil pan can reach 180f
It might melt the plastic, if it stays there long enough it might corrode within the oil.

might as well take the oil pan off.

A sharpened putty knife and a hammer is a pretty good way to get between the pan and the block and cut the gasket. Be careful what you try to stick in there, you could do a lot of damage to the block. Other than that, when you tighten the pan bolts, tighten them equally and alternate from one side of the pan to the other. Its not much harder than changing the oil.

Heat a pan of water or oil to about 250 degrees and throw that piece from another bottle in it and see if it melts?

+1. That's a lot easier than pulling the pan but then again it may not hurt to replace the gasket anyways.

I wouldn't trust doing that at all. The car is going to reach running temp repeatedly. If it's a daily driver it will reach those temps several times a day.

It's not just if that piece will melt right away, it's what will it do a month from now, 6 months from now, etc, etc. I'd definitely get it out of there.

I would leave it because i'm lazy....

Tap the pan with a rubber mallet.

I've read some crazy **** but prying the **** off? A few firm taps with a rubber mallet after the bolts are off should have it drop right down.

just get another yellow thing and bake in your oven at 300 degrees for a day and see if you notice any deformation.....

oil level sensor would be a great place to fish it out to avoid dropping the pan...

if you arent careful enough to put a hoseclamp on, i dont think you are careful enough to reseal the oilpan while in the car without making it leak???? *shrug*

Both of the oil pans I've taken off needed to be pried off. I tried using a rubber mallet, even a few lighter hits w a rubber dead blow hammer. Nothing. But if you got it off that way more power to you!

Again I'm not for heating a similar piece one time to see what happens.

Try the oil level sensor idea. If the piece had any metal on it you could try sticking a telescoping magnetic pick up tool in.

You know what I would do if this happened to me? I'd say "****", then shrug and go about my business.

If it is small enough to exit through the drain plug, get at it that way with a hooked piece of wire. If not, then don't sweat it. Even if it gradually dissolves, it probably won't cause an issue.

I find the oil pan gaskets to be pieces of ****. Cheaper to use rtv, and works better.

Tip. 10mm ratcheting box wrench with flex head kicks SO MUCH *** for those front bolts by the crossmember. I can drop my pain in less than 10 minutes after the car is proper on jacks.

I mean, just for that alone, it was worth the $40 for the metric set! Love em.
