Help! car problem!

Hello, i have an 88 gx automatic and i've had a problem with it. When i start driving somewhere its fine, then outta no where i was at a stoplight waiting for it to go green, when it turned green i gave it some gas and it moved a bit to about 10mph, then all of a sudden it wouldn't move! i was giving it some more gas and it just started rolling and jerking and then i tapped the gas a bit and it started working slightly better...it randomly does this anyone know what the problem could be?
