Hold your clutch in, put your car in first, then put it in reverse... release clutch and accelerate backward,s, avoiding inanimate objects, children, and animals.

Enjoy.

Is this normal? If not what do you do to fix it?

I had a friend who had a similar problem in his taurus SHO and they replaced the entire tranny. Not exactly sure what causes it, but hopefully the tranny won't have to be replaced.

I am looking in the Haynes manual and it says the Thier is a shift rod for 5th/reverse and a shift fork for 5th & reverse...5th works fine...and if it was a synchronizer it seems like it would be grinding, (Its not) yet it just won't go in?
Anyone else?

Try playing with the clutch a little. Put the stick in reverse, and put some pressure back on it like you are trying to get it to go into the gear, and let the clutch out very slightly. See if it will slide in. Also try depressing the clutch multiple times while in neutral before trying to put it in gear.

Thanks for the idea's, but I have tried all that with not even getting it close to going in?

I did get a email saying my 5th/reverse shift fork is out of alignment and the tailshaft of the tranny needs to be removed, exposing this area? I see no mention of this area in my Haynes manual? Anyone know?
Thanks much!

I know this sounds silly, but why not bring it to a tranny shop? aside from not being able to back out of the lot usually they can bring it up on the hoist and see where the problem is... free quote.
Good luck!

reverse in an FC is a straight cut gear with no synchro.

how does the car go into first? your problem MAY be with the hydrolics.

Try wiggeling the stick in nutral, than putting in reverse. Also try letting up the clutch in nutral.

It's kinda common for FD guys to loose reverse, from a botched 2nd to 3rd shift.

I had the exact same problem back when i first got my car.

I could get it into every gear except for reverse. It feels like there is something stuck in the gearbox that just wont let you go into that gear.

Solution... you just have to fool with it a little. put it in every gear.. and try to put it in reverse over and over again.. eventually it will go in. It will take some effort to put it in the first time but after that i should be fine. good luck!

Try pulling up the shifter boot and checking for any debris that may be blocking it. Deteriorated shifter bushings may be the cause. It's worth a try and doesnt cost anything.

had that same problem with mine. lost 5th and reverse... bad gas millage and no backing up. damn. it would fix itself every couple weeks, then, back to broken. i didnt want to tear the tranny apart myself. and the tranny place wanted more than the cost of a used j-spec just to open it up. so i just put in the jspec myself, very easy, did it in one day.

Well I ended up buying the car from him. The 5th gear works fine. But it just wont go into reverse?? Could the hydrolics be messed up?

I am going to take the stick off soon and see if there is stuff stuck in there somehow blocking it? Would bushing cause this maybe? I took off the boot and noticed that the plastic pieces inside were pretty tore up so I will be replacing those and the bushing and such.. Would those fix it you think? Or is it something a bit different.

Anyone?

So today I went and removed the boot and such and noticed the little metal bushing things were pretty wrinkled up. Kind of looked like a little kid was bending them and such heh. Also parts of the innerboot things were comming off too. So I am thinking maybe a piece is blocking it or something or inside of it. I actually have new bushings and boots comming, should be here monday/tuesday. So we will see after that. I didnt want to remove everything though because I need to go to the exhaust shop in the morning tomorrow to fix the exhaust. And didnt want to run into problems with that.

But could that be the problem perhaps? Like I said before it goes fine into 5th gear so I wouldnt think It would be the 5th/reverse fork?? But I dont know anything about transmissions, so maybe I am wrong and it needs to be realigned or something. Anyways If someone with some knowledge with TII transmissions give me some light here thanks.
