Heat shield options

I have a S4 TII with a BNR stage 4 turbo crammed into my FB. The turbo is very close to the lower intake manifold and I need some kind of heat shield or wrap to protect my intake from heat soak.

I also want to protect my intake which is sitting behind my radiator. See the attached pictures.

I firured I would ask you FC guys as it is your engine after all. Any help or advice is appreciated!

you do have that pretty crammed in there, possible to maybe get a front pic of the turbo, via saying put it right in front of where the turbo is to get a better understanding of how much room is exactly between the turbo assembly and the lower intake manny, also what are you wanting as far as protecting your intake that sits behind your radiator like from what water?

you should be able to use stock T2 heat shields. there is one that goes between the turbine and the LIM, and one that wraps around the turbine and bolts to the manifold, as well as one that covers the exhaust manifold.

I'm picking it up (hopefully) tomorrow and I will take some petter pictures and try to measure exactly how much space I have to work with.

I would like to protect my intake from sucking in all that nice, hot, radiator air. I'm willing to build something custom if necessary, but I like to know what kind of materials people are using and what has already been done (with success). No need to reinvent the wheel.

Hmm, I guess I have never seen a stock TII. With the T04 cold-side, I do not know if something stock will fit over it.

As long as they aren't touching the heat transfer will be low. Air sucks royally at transferring heat. AFAIK heat shields are to protect things like plastic, the leaves you drive over, etc. But if you're still worried try a high temperature heat wrap with a little thickness (paper-thin shiny foil does almost nothing).

I would just get a turbo blanket and wrap your downpipe with heat wrap. it's a simple cheap solution that will work great.

you can also put a heat blanket on your lower intake manifold:
http://turblown.net/store/index.php?productID=55

as for the intake not much you can really do besides custom fabing up a colt air intake that'll get in front of your radiator. or if you just want to keep it in one place zip ties or maybe just some custom brackets would work well.

Try the factory heatshields first. It's a factory turbine housing, remember? That's how close the factory turbo sits. I'm not sure about heat shields over the compressor side though, you may need to make some modifications.

The thing about factory heatshields is that they trap heat in but they still allow air to circulate under there and you don't have the potential for moisture issues.

Where do you get this from?

That thing better be pure titanium for $250

By Colt, you mean the car? Thant will work?

Pics please of anyone's setup.

I made my own heatshield to fit between the turbo hotside and the lower intake. As far as your intake setup, mine was pretty much the same as yours. I was never happy with it. I finally decided to ditch the front mount and put the top mount back on. This freed up the space beside the radiator. https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=168

I also cut the hood for the top mont to breath and added an '04 Subaru WRX scoop. https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=187

Might be some thought for you.

Edit: btw thats a reallly good idea ^^

I don't think the radiator air is a big issue for the intake manifold when talking about heat soak...air filter/intake yes but not the manifolds. Biggest heat source for the manifolds is the exhaust since they're on the same side.

The stock heatshields will work fine. And I'm pretty sure the compressor doesn't have any stock heat shielding but not 100%.

Remember, this is an FB, so I will not be cutting the hood to put in a scoop. I'm actually quite against hood scoops as I love the sleeper look. Back in the day, I put the N/A hood on my TII and added a FMIC.

Also, I do not see the point as the intercooler piping is reall not an issue and I'm running a standalone so I do not have the AF sensors up there.

I'm not sure what you are saying in the second paragraph.

Anyone have a stock heat shield that I can try?

The main mount for the heatshield is the bracket which bolts onto the stud coming out of the LIM. Mine didn't have a second one but its easy to drill the heatsheild (its thin metal) and bolt it on a threaded hole on the stock manifold.

If you are running the stock LIM, turbo manifold and hotside the heatshield will work.

Thumbs up

maybe a diff exaust manifold will re position your turbo..something custom made, then you should get some more airflow around it and be able to wrap it. i have a mariah scoop on my passenger side light and it shoots cold air right at my filter. im also going to add a scoop to the shroud surrounding the IC and rad. wrapped my downpipe and vented the hood a little bit, dont really like the vented hood or mariah vent for sleepers sake but they add to the cooling.

what about getting the hotside and downpipe coated instead of worrying about added extras?

the stock heatshields should fit your turbo just fine.

the only piece i could give you is the one that goes between the turbo and LIM.

Ooo, you have one available? I'll gladly pay for shipping. The hotside manifold is stock, I actually have a spacer to make the cold side fit so there is slightly more space and airflow on the hot side.

Let me know!

edit: I'll let you guys know, because I think heatshields and underhood temps are very important when it comes to any car but rotaries especially...
