MIne does it after about 30 minutes of driving. I think it is time for new tranny fluid, but I may be wrong. I am changing mine tomorrow, just to be safe!

Well, all of mine were torn when I did my shifter bushings last weekend. I am still changing my tranny fluid, though!

Your 2 shift boots are torn, worn, or simply gone. Also since you'll be removing some parts of the shifter might as well get some tranny fluid in there too! ^_^ Good luck!

Peace,
AJ ^_^

those boots get all nasty and gooey over time. Especially if your shifter seeps tranny fluid.

also make sure your pre-cat and main cat's heat shields are still in place. If the OEM exhaust has more than 85K miles on it, clogged cats will generate excessive heat.

hey.. how do you check your tranny fluid?
and the heat Used to come out of the shift boot but.. i replaced the shift boot and new exhaust and Y pipes the past weekend.... i havent checked on if heat is coming through.. hmm.. mebe is should look at it..

and i checcked under the car and it seems like there is motor oil all over! i certainly dont think this is normal but... there is some type of oil under the transmission too.! what is this? is my tranny fluid.. leaking? or... did i have this totally wrong?

just a question, but what exactly is the shift boot, I thought it was just the leather arround the shifter but you guys make it sound like its something more mechanical. I wonder because the leather does get rather warm(not hot though), and it is ripped a little twords where 4th gear is.

Typically, you would want to replace all 3 rubber pieces. My parts cost was over $60, including the plastic ring & paper gasket for the shifter. Helped to reduce tranny and road noise as well.

the shifter boot is the rubber boot inside the leather boot.... so you take the shift **** off... and then the leather boot with the plastic thingy.. and then check the boots to see if they're torn.. if they are.. heat will come out and tranny fluid maybe even squirt up.. i bought my car and it was fine and now the shifter boot is torn... and the top leather boot is ripping little by little on each corner.. because of the heat....

Nonsense.

Here's what I would do.

Loosen some of you exhuast components underneeth the car. Or just scrap their gaskettes. Then stick a garden hose in the shif boot. Finally when you're driving, stick the hose in your mouth. That's should bring it back to normal. Hmmmm.

either that or your tranny's going to blow cause you haven't changed the oil or there is none.

Loosen the fill plug (Square plug on the side of your transmission), and stick your finger in it. The fluid should come to the top of the hole.

Both. You should not see any of where the shifter bolts to the tranny. The inner on yours is gone, the middle is ripped.

I went to the mazdatrix website to figure out which parts i need, but i'm a little confused. They list an inner boot for 81-95, no middle boot, and the outer boot is a 3 piece set for 86-92. The web page where this is mentioned is http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm maybee i'm just reading it wrong . . . any help would be usefull.
