Does your car still have the exhaust heat shield?

I also have a 91 5spd and I had the same problem. Once you replace all the inner shifter boots, the problem will pretty much go away. While you're in there, you should probably replace all the shifter gaskets and bushings. That will tighten up the shifter play and make it work a great deal smoother.,

I drove for a week without the shifter boot on and the rubber boots underneath (was waiting for my bushings to come in) and had the same problem. you can basically see the road when looking down and around the tranny case when everything is off, so when you're driving, theres a huge blast of hot air coming up to your hand / shifter. like he said above, replace all the inner rubber boots and the shifter bushings isnt a bad idea while you're down there, unless your shifter is already tight. www.mazdatrix.com look in the tranny/shifter section

I'd check your exhaust too. Mine was really bad when I first got it. The metal part of the shifter got really hot, and I was sweating like a mother in that thing (AC doesn't work, and it was raining the whole way home, so no window action either.) I replaced the gaskets, and now it's not so bad at all.
