Headers glowing red - Running lean??
Hi everyone,
I have a '88 Rx-7 n/a. The engine vibrates at idle, and gets worse from there. It's bad enough to feel it through the chassis. I had it up on stands the other day and had a friend run through the gears while I was under the car looking to see if I could see the source of the problem. While I noticed nothing directly contributing to the vibration after about one minute the front cat got cherry red! I assumed the cat was plugged, and I had it up on stands to build a dual exhaust, so I didn't think much of it.
So I built a custom dual exhaust, header into a free flow performance cat (one on each side) into turbo tube mufflers. I take the car out for a spin and, sure enough, now the header is glowing red! (the old exhaust was completely stock)
I thought the timing could be off, so I checked it and also had another shop check it and it is right on the money. So I am assuming the car is running lean, and am looking for advice on what to check first. Is there any common problems that make the 13B run lean?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Brian

I had a problem with my injectors when I first got my car. The problem wasn't with the old injectors tho.
The problem was the plastic connector that holds the harness connector to the injector. It was brittle and broken to the point it wouldn't hold the plug onto the injector.
In other words, all my injectors weren't even plugged in.
Worth a shot, ya never know.

glowing headers would be either too rich, or retarded timing. Since you checked the timing, it's got to be running rich. I don't know what the cause is though...

Running Rich? On conventional engines, a glowing manifold is caused by a lean condition, as fuel is used to cool the cylinder. Lack of fuel, engine runs hot, exhaust glows.
Do rotary's overheat when rich?
Thanks,
Brian

I know this does not diagnose your problem but looking for a rich condition is the wrong road to go down.
