Has anyone figured out what causes dash pimples?

I have this sudden problem with dash pimples on my car above the instrument cluster that just sprang up. I looked at it and it is exuding this brown like substance. I went on vacation out of state for 2 weeks and I come back seeing pimples with brown exudation coming from them. They weren't there before I went on vacation.

I did a Google search about the issue but only found ways to cover it up, but not what actually causes the problem.

Got the same on my second fc. I always figured since this fc leaked thru the sunroof all the extra moisture did it. My 1st fc with no sunroof has no leaks and no marks on the dash.

What about the color of the dash? I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Mine with pimples is a dark grey.

I think it's the round yellow thing.

Armor All type stuff is not good for your vinyl.

I use leather conditioner on it, not vinyl crap and definitely not armor all (I am actually allergic to armor all).

you notice that it pimples on the cluster first, which is closer to the window, which is (probably) hotter... someone should start making dashes for these, its actually the thing i change the most on an FC.

Do they make Pro-Active (zit cream) for dashboards?

Thoughts on Prevention of Dashacne

I have a friend in the car business. He does a very nice business supporting the Porsche 928. Those cars were super cars in their era and were optioned from the factory with complete flexibility. If you so desired, any and every soft surface in the car could be ordered from the factory covered with your choice of any color of leather. This was very popular in the US. Many of the old cars are in need of restoration. My buddy recommends a leather conditioner called Leatherique, claiming it is vastly superior to any other leather treatment for maintenance and restoring damaged, aged leather. The stuff really does work amazingly well. The inventor of Leatherique's primary business was restoration of fine automobiles, Bentley, Ferrari, Rolls Royce etc.

Yet many of the Eurospec cars had extensive vinyl in the interior. Leatherique recommends using petroleum jelly on vinyl seats, door panels, plastic trim panels and dashes. Spread it thin, let it set for a time, buff it off.

My dash is grey. In the car it was perfect when I bought it, and it was outside for years. It had no leaks. I had it for 2 years outside with no issues and no leaks. I put the car in the garage for the engine swap and removed the dash from the car, also storing it in the garage.

I got pimples on the dash a couple weeks later. I never cleaned the dash with anything.

And yes it must be toxic.. I have no idea how a dashboard can produce fluid, although the fluid that comes out of mine is clear.

i had one with a big crack in it, and the crack would get bigger and smaller with the heat, so in the winter it was small, and in the summer it was big

Clokker would have told you that the Vaseline is a good Protector and shines up those plasticy parts..
Seeing he didn't post and I remembered him mentioning it with the plastic vent parts(like the piping and such) I thought I'd post to give him his credit where credit is due moment!

I was just going to revel in a big "Told You So!" moment but that would seem hubristic now, so I won't.

But Vaseline really is the way to go folks.

I knew I had also seen it on these boards, expected it was likely clokker but I didn't look it up. The Porsche guys suggest it arrests the aging process on the vinyl and plastic trim.

Sounds like something either from heat and/or radiation from the Sun could cook and dry out the adhesive underneath and expand the vinyl on top. Either that, or something in a chemical to do the same thing )(i.e. solvents in cleaner or grease)... Could be both!!

Petroleum is a wonderful substance for anything... ANYTHING!

It happened to mine as well. Always been garaged the past 3 years. The bumps started appearing about 6 months ago. Same clear liquid. Sorry if the picture turned out upside down. It's upright on my phone.

Weird. I was looking at the plastic that the vinyl is attached to there and it seems to have pimpled as well (the crumbly yellow **** that you can see when the cluster is out).

I could see it because part of the plastic the binnacle screws into is partially broke on my car (I did something stupid) and had the cluster out. You could clearly see spots on the plastic that coincided with the pimples in the vinyl up top.

I think it might have to do with the urethane foam they use to make the dash soft, for safety. That stuff they used back then was not as "refined" as what they use now (plastics and other stuff have come a long way since the '80's).
