I just replaced my instrument cluster( i did a five speed swap and decided i wanted the cluster with the 8K redline) the original odometer had 97K miles, the new one i bought had 144K miles. This is probaly fraud or something, but i was really bored so i hooked a drill to the speedometer with 144k miles and was going to run the milage back down to 97K miles. My calculations after doing some tests with the drill showed that it would take 2 weeks of straight running to run the odometer down. I wasnt going to wait for that so i took the odometer apart and reset the odometer to 0 miles (im greedy) Trust me it took awhile for me to figure it out, but it gave me a certain amount of satisfaction. Am i really wierd or has someone else done something like this.

 

i'm sure plenty of people have. but it is illegal as hell

 

just don't sell the car now...I do believe it is a federal offense to tamper with the odometer! (but that would be cool to see it at 000"s again LOL)

 

Might make Carfax choke too when you sell it.

 

Why not set it to what the old one says? Then your mileage is correct.

its not illegal, just on the title when you sell the car, you are forced to check "Odometer not original miles"

Its actually a common thing. If you don't check that though, yeah its fraud...

EDIT: I think you are "required" to have some sort of dmv// mechanics certification to have the legal privledge of doing it. Either way, you won't get in trouble as long as you disclose the fact that you car has more than "5000 miles" when you go and try to sell your 17yr old rx-7...

 

I've done this before.. It's pretty easy, and I came to about the same conclusion of 2weeks drilling time when I first tried that

Not on my rx-7 though, or any street legal car for that matter, did it on my AE86, just so I know how many km's its done around the circuit hehe, (if it ever actually gets out there.... )

 

call your local dealer and ask where they go for cluster/spedometer recalibrations. they can do it for you and shouldn;t cost alot. I did it on another car and it cost $20 and took a couple hours.
