Has anyone done this?
Alright.
it seems impossible to buy an alloy NA hood for an FC.
It also seems impossible to buy a fibreglass or CF hood for the FC either.
Has anyone bought an alloy turbo hood, cut out the stock (and totally useless is you have a FMIC) bonnet scoop, and replaced it with a reverse scoop?
The stock bonnet scoop is slightly offset is it not? so to balance such an operation out, you'd have to cut as wide on the other side to balance it out, so you might end up having quite a *wide* reverse scoop in your bonnet.
Anyone heard of anyone modding a stock bonnet in this way?
It is looking like the only way I am going to get the light reverse scoop bonnet i want for my FC. All these group buys turn out to be bullshit.
I.
Have.
The.
Cash.
Can someone procure a reasonable priced fibreglass or CF reverse scoop hood or not?
I can source an alloy turbo bonnet for 200US, and spend a bit more chopping it up to house a reverse scoop. So perhaps it IS my best bet, even tho i desperately want the proper CF example.

Being in Australia, finding an aluminum NA hood is going to be next to impossible.
If you want to find an aluminum turbo hood and chop it up, be my guest.
If you got the cash, $800US should be able to get you a CF hood with the reverse scoop.  Try and contact K2RD for more info - http://www.k2rd.com/
Freight shipping to Australia is going to cost even more, so you're looking at around a cool US$1,000...

I have yet to see a street-quality CF bonnet that saves any significant weight over an aluminum bonnet, so I don't see any point in spending $800 USD to save 1 lb. You could order a competition composite bonnet from one of the major distributors if you don't mind something that looks horrible and requires hood pins.
If you can't find an alloy bonnet in OZ, then perhaps you could order one from a US salvage yard. They normally sell for around $200-250 USD, but I imagine that the shipping would be rather expensive.

You're right about the weight - the carbon fiber NA hood that was prototyped on Paul Ko's yellow FC was coming close to weighing as much as the stock aluminum hood.  The bare hood with no hinges or latch was already over 10lbs.  It's a fiberglass core with a single layer of carbon fiber on top.  The hood was shown off at SSIV down in Irvine a few months ago, so some of you might've seen it.

Yeah, IMO it isn't worth $800 to save 1 lb, but it IS worth $800 to be able to grab all that nice pressurized air off the windshield.

Please, correct me someone if i am wrong,
the Steel bonnets weigh about 20+kg (over 40lbs)
the Alloy Bonnets weigh about 10kg (20lbs)
the Carbon Fibre bonnets weigh about 7lbs
For $400, if i have nuthin better to spend it on, i'll buy an alloy bonnet and chop it to bits to try & fit a reverse cowl in there. Unless someone wants to donate one to me for the first experiment!
Any Mazda wreckers out there wanna sponser me, a conduit to a vast Australian Rotary Market!?! I'll put your sticker on my car, all u hafta do is give me all the parts i need!
Had to try, works for everyone else
