harmful to run w/o TPS?

I'm curious how much influence the TPS has on the overall running of the engine. Am I creating a lean or rich condition by running w/o the TPS connected? This was a mistake on my part (by not reconnecting it), but the engine seemed to be much smoother on/off throttle than with the original TPS connected. Any thoughts?

You got a check engine light, right?
The S5 TPS plug includes the wide range TPS also, which controls the MOP.
The ECU defaults should keep you from harm as long as you fix it soon.

Check to see if your TPS is within spec. If not adjust it or if it is defective replace it.

Would running without a tps cause high rpm detonations like a too high set tps? Mine will not go above 4.5, is it ok -.5 or +.5

I think the FSM states that from 4-6k is within spec at full throttle.

I installed a used TPS, but I'm having trouble adjusting and keeping in spec. I can get 1K ohms, but when I tighten the nut to lock the setting, it goes out of whack again. Also, I was quoted $471+ dollars for a brand new one from Mazda. Is this accurate? I know there are second-hand ones available, but whose to say they aren't dry-rotted or worn out as well?

The biggest problem right now is a lurching or jumping sensation off idle or when pulling away in 2nd under load. The car will buck as is I'm pressing and releasing the gas pedal. It's highly anoying in stop and go traffic. This doesn't happen with the TPS disconnected. I'd like the car to operate as Mazda intended, but don't like appearing as if I don't know how to operate a manual transmission.

Thanks for the link. The S5 I'm helping with has 2 TPS sensors. I assume the same procedure for both applies? Or am I missing something? They both look like TPS sensors.

S5 cars have both a narrow and a wide range TPS. However, only the narrow range one has an adjustment screw. To adjust it, hold the plug with the clip on the top, and you want the two wires on the right side of the plug. These are the green and black ones that he's talking about.

FWIW, I found Advance Auto (Discount Auto parts) carries a TPS for about $150.00 I may or may not bite the bullet. I'm going to try and adjust again this weekend. Thanks for the replies.
