hardened Stationary Gears

hay i was wondering how can u tell a hardened Stationary Gear from a stock one????

Drag a file across an unimportant surface (such as the outside of the bolt flange). If it makes a mark, then it's standard steel. If it hardly has any effect, then it's hardened.
