Talking The harda$$ way to take an engine out!

Well I was getting a little impatient with getting my engine out so I didnt want to wait till we could find the cherry picker in the garage... So I decided to get the help of a friend a pull the engine by hand. I got all the bolts off and stripped the engine to the long block, then it was ready. I put a 4x4 across the engine bay and then attached a cable to the engine and then got my trusty steel bar. My friend pried the engine up as I pulled it forward and got it off the mounts. I then rested then engine on a board that I put over the steering rack and sway bar. Then I leaped over the engine and squeezed between the engine and the tranny. Then dan(my friend) grabed the front of the engine and I the rear and strong-armed it over the nose of the car and put it in my little red wagon. I then got out of the engine bay and wheeled it into the garage. You will be pleased to know that nothing was scrached, dented, damaged, FUBARed up during this procedure...
Also everything is shiney now thanks to the magical beast called pressure washer.

That reminds me of my first rotary pull when I looped a chain up over a rafter to pull out a 12A from my old 79.

Between two people the long block should not be too much for them.

Yeah 2 ppl should beable to lift a long block easily. The only thing that would suck is picking it up from the engine bay.

with my 12a i took the engine block out UNDER THE CAR!! it was a bitch but i had one night to do it before i moved 500 miles away and i wanted to take the engine with me but leave the car. it wasnt that bad actually, i had the car up really high on 4 stands and used 3 jacks in the process of lowering the engine down, i.e tighten two jack stands remove the third, lower one and replace the third... kind of hard to explain but works, not a suggestion cause it was very dangerous but if you know how then do it lol was easy for me

I know that the old 13b carb from a cosmo with tranny was probally like 400, that was a mother and a half to pick up out of the bed of a truck and it almost killed me and my friend matt! I am thinking it weighed around 200ish in this situation, It may be more we were at weird angles all the way.

If pulling the engine by hand makes you a hardass, I guess using a 30 foot boom crane makes me a fat *** lazy bastard -- so true!

Hehe.... I pulled my engine last week in 2 hours 15 minutes- fully stripped down exept the cluthc and oil pan.
That's gotta be a record!
Also, didn't use a hoist, just myself and a buddy- stood on either side of the engine bay and manhandled it out!

Putting in back in without a lift is the most fun... Did it with my roomate- Just used 2 2x4's and some seat belt strap as a sling- then lifted it into the engine compartment and it magically lined up somehow.

Well, we kinda got a big *** messy garage. By messy i mean we got like 20-30 cars and trucks in it along with other crap... we lost the fork lift once, that was pretty funny it was in the corner behind a dump truck. I was also working on the 7 at the garage at my house, lottabit bit smaller, I wouldnt be able to loose it there . So you can kinda see how that happened

If my car was closer to work, I would have used the 40 ton crane to pull it out, just for the picture
