Hard Starting but fires right up when pushed

A friend of mine has an S4 with about 100K miles on it. The car recently started to like to stay in one spot in the driveway. If you crank it it sounds like it wants to start but no go. If you push or drag start it in second it fires right up.

Injectors were cleaned not too long ago, car is well maintained and runs strong when it runs.

After the usual staring at it holding a beer, my only thoughts lead to low compression. Figuring that second gear can spin the engine faster than the starter=less bleed down before the bang. We're waiting for a friend with a factory compression computer to come over to check.

I usually rip all the stock electrics out of a car when building one, is there anything simple we might be missing.

Either low compression or a tired starter. Verify that the starter is turning the motor over fast enough, and that the battery is fully charged.

Battery is good, even does it while hooked up to a booster/charger. Starter sounds like its spinning as fast as they all do.

So thats a +1 on compression.

It should be turning over the engine at around 250rpms.

I thought I'd dig this back up to fill people in on what was wrong.

After checking every electrical item that we could think of it came down to un-misted fuel. One of the primary injectors had a crappy spray pattern and a lot of the fuel came out in big drops. So, all the injectors were taken to be gone through and the car runs like a champ again.

This was the problem even after one of those professional injector cleanings where you unhook the fuel pump and run the engine on a seperate fuel source with the cleaner in it.
