Question Are Haltech & other standalone ECUs smog-legal? Also, S-AFC or stand-alone EMS?

Hi,

Are any of the standalone ECUs that totally replace the stock computer smog-legal in CA?

My mechanic suggested the HKS F-Con, since it is a piggyback and smoggable but @ $1300 for the part I'm wondering if it would be better to get a Haltech or other EMS... but I would have to be able to pass smog because the car is my daily driver.

I suggested installing an S-AFC instead, but he said it wouldn't correctly measure the boost or something like that. I'm fairly sure that he isn't trying to rip me off since he runs a fairly reputable shop in the area and I'm a longtime customer - he's done all of the major work on my car that I couldn't perform myself for several years.

Anyway, most threads I've found on the forum advocate either the S-AFC (as the inexpensive option) or a Stand Alone EMS.

Any advice for getting either would be appreciated. Thanks!

No, they are not legal unless they come with a CARB exception sticker, however I do know a couple of people that have managed to pass smog with a Haltech

put the ecu in the stock location and use black wire loom and tape and I doubt anyone would find the haltech.

and the f-con is totaly not worth the money. if you really want one. get them used for $300-400.
