Regardless of whether it works or not, it's wrong. And totally unnecessary as well since there are many commercial degreasers that will do the job easily. I recommend Castrol Super Clean.
And you certainly don't want to be spraying cold water onto a hot engine. Great way to crack things.

And who's to say it's right or wrong? It's my car...it's been done numerous times and no problems....my dads done it .....no problems....seems to work...no problems.
Just my thoughts.
And you cant JUST use degreaser...its got to get rinsed off somehow, someway. It doesnt rinse itself off. And no rag is going to be able to get where the water can.
Like I said...just use common sense about where you are pointing the water and everything will be fine.
And another note...he mentioned that the engine was on a hoist..no in the engine bay.

That's fine, and you can continue to do it. 
But clearly, it causes problems as evidenced by this thread. This is certainly not the first time I have heard of troubles caused by pressure washing an engine bay, and it won't be the last either.

Alrighty, problem solved.
Turns out when I steam cleaned the engine yesterday, the Fuel Cut connection came loose, and after the driving for seven hours, it eventually disconnected. Just had to reconnect. Sweet.

your ALTERNATOR is deadand it ran fine afterwards because it took a while to drain the battery....at least that's what happened to me when i powerwashed my engine bay.
