Arrow GUYS I need a lot of help with my RX-7 i just got

Hi all i just got lucky and someone gave me a 88 RX-7 GXL. This would be the second GXL in 1 year period. Anyways back on topic, the guy said that it overheated and he just parked it at my aunt house couple of months ago. It eventually stop started and everything. So today i started to fix it up by gutting the whole interior, bought new rad. and new battery. The problems is that it still doesnt start at all and in my other posted i asked if it was the O-Ring that failed. But there so many different type of problems, so this is where u guys come in. I'm guessing it might be flooded now but im not sure. Sorry for the long Post.

Thank You,

VOEUN

If it overheated, you probably need to rebuild the motor.

will the car even turn over? If it does but wont start all you have to do to see if its flooded is pull the EGI fuse under the hood. Turn the motor over for 15 seconds. Puts the fuse back in. Turn the car over. It should start if it was just flooded.

Ok that wont work if it doesnt turn over at all. Is the starter even making a clicking/grinding noise? I'm tryin to figure out of the car has a faulty starter/starter sloenoid or if you just have a locked up motor(which is highly possible).

my buddy has an 88' with the same issue, seemed the cooling system was building too much back pressure, the only fix was a rebuild according to "rotary performance" in va

I never said that gutting the car will help it start. Forgot to mention that the old owner had a baterry explosion incident inside the car so that what im doin gutting it out so i can replace the whole interior with new carpets. While trying to figure out why it isnt starting i can take the stress out my gutting the int. The owner says he replace the alternater and the starter. Nope no grinding noises or anything from the starter i believe.

Ok, I'm confused here. help me out Takumi. 1.) Does the car do anything when you turn the key over? If so what? 2.) Does the starter make ANY noises? Clicking maybe?

Hmmmm. no lights even come on on the dummy panel? Hmmm. Check the fuses and ignition switch. Also, while your at it. See if you can manually turn the motor over by hand.

Well, just wedge the clutch down with a stick, prybar, or someone. and take a long handle socket (normal socket wrench with a bar on the handle will work) with the proper socket to fit the crank bolt and try to turn the motor. If you cant its probably locked up.

Are the battery terminals clean ? Take the battery in and have it tested.

First of all, check your starter. Make sure it works. Once the motor cranks, thats a good sign. If it doesn't start, it can be two things.

1) Either its flooded with gas, and you can do what Forsaken said.

or

2) The engine is flooded with coolant and you'll need a rebuild.

I'm opted for the second because you said that the car had been overheated, which would lead to coolant seal failure and leaking coolant into the rotor housings. If the owner had patched that problem up right away with copper weld or some other copper based, then that would have bought you a few months (maybe 2-3 max). But he didn't, so the worst case scenario is that the coolant in your housings plus the amount of time its been sitting, well... thats quite a bit of rust. Good luck.

Kevin

Thanx Kenshin! u might be rite with ur second idea because the owner said it overheated and white smoke and coolant was commin out the exhaust pipe. Is there anyways i can still start up the car with the coolant inside the rotor housing?

Thank You,

Trying to start the motor and not actually getting it to go. Run a search in this forum for "flooding". When you took out the plugs, did any coolant drip out of the spark plug holes? If not, good. That means the motor might not be rusted internally
