GTU's, What makes them special?

Is it like the Nissan Silvia version where they have a A,K,Q,J serious? "A" being the lightest and developed towards the racer?

I am looking at a 1990 GTU w/ 120k miles for a trade for a 94 Civic.

It also has a Apex'i N1 exhaust.

Are the value of GTU more then a regular GXL?

Also, what seperates a GTU from a GTUs?

the FAQ dealer spec sheet basically does show the differences. The GTUs is most notable for having the 4.30 gearing.

Common myths are that is had the "turbo" drive train but it does not.

A "GTU" is a base model.
If you did a proper search, you would've figured this out.
A base model is not the most desirable model.

The GXL is considered a "luxury" model - hence, the "L" at the end.
The GXL is considered a higher model than the GTU in 1990.

It does however, have it's own special NA drivetrain. (Read: GTUs specific fifth gear of .756)

And for the original poster (since this is probably one of the most confusing things about the FC Model designations): the GTUs (note that last letter) is different than the GTU (which is the base model).

1986-1988
Base (86-87)
Sport (86-87)
Luxury Package (86-87.5)
GXL (86-88)
SE (87.5-88, Luxury Package became SE with some changes in latter half of 87, Base became SE in 88)
GTU (88, Sport became GTU in 88)
Turbo II (87-88)
Convertible (88)

89-91
GTU (89-90, Base model became GTU for 1989-1990)
GXL (89-90)
Turbo II (89-90)
Convertible (89-91)
GTUs (89-90, Sportiest Naturally Aspirated model for 1989-1991)
Coupe (91, Base, Luxury, GXL lumped into Coupe in 1991, depending on the options package)
Turbo (91, Turbo II became Turbo in 1991)

GTUs is the only 89-91 RX7 (including turbos) with NO SUNROOF, lighter more rigid chassis.

the whole GTU like a nissan Silvia thing... hmmm
only in North America we got GTU, from what i know, in Japan its a totally different ballpark of model ranges =p

From what ive read in the manual it had slightly stiffer suspension. Not the auto adjust or the turbo spec, but slightly heavier duty.

Also, had the turbo 2 4 piston calipers in the front, with the single piston rears. At least mine did. (without changing it)

The 88 GTU was basically the 89+ GTUs. Im not sure if the GTUs had the 4 piston calipers in the front though...ive heard a couple people say that they did and a couple say that they didnt.

No sunroof from the factory, but the dealers could've put them in.

From what I know of the J-spec FC's you had the:

GT-R (base model turbo)
GT-Limited (similar to the luxury model)
GT-X (highest grade model)
Inifni (Sport version, minimalist model)

GTUs had the 4 pot brakes in the front, vented singles in the rear, the auto adjust was on the shocks, the Sport, GXL, 88 GTU, GTUs, Turbo II, 91 Turbo and 91 Coupe with at least an A package all had the same springs.
