Sorry, my bud in Irvine hasn't got back to me on production for 88 yet.
Off the top of my head I would guess around 7000-9000.
The 88 GTU was the upgraded version of the 86-87 Sport, with performance brakes and suspension, LSD, T2 seats, power mirrors, tinted glass, the sports aero kit with the new wing style rear spoiler. Most came with a sunroof, but occasionally there were a few without.
Its really what the 89-90 GTUs model was except it didn't have the 4.3 rear end, and was about 75lbs lighter than the GTUs.
Road and track in 88 compairing the 10thAE T2 and the GTU, called the 88 GTU the real 10th anniversary RX-7 and picked it over the bloated 10th AE. In that article that the 88 GTU

is one of todays truely great driving machines, a superb balance of all the things that make a car go without sacrificing any of the qualities that make it nice to be in. At $18,150 it isn't cheap, but it's certainly reasonable
Not capably raw in the RX-7 tradition, but rude

Didn't the 88 GTU come with the TII tranny as well? I haven't thought about my tranny for a while now (it is running great thank god) and I remember doing some research on it but can't remember what I found now. You had posted a list with all the model #s for individual parts a while back.

No, again the 88 GTU (or any N/A) didn't come with any beefer or heavy duty tranny. I came with the same tranny as all the other S4 coupes (the M582).
The ribs are on all the trannies. The easiest way to see if there is a Turbo (or R-type tranny- R526), is to look at the botton of the tranny and see if there is an access plate. The R-type trannies have an access plate bolted onto the bottom.
And only the 88 GTU came with a LSD, the 89-90 GTU did not.
