does any one know if the gauge cluster of a gtu work on a gxl ...............you know the one that goes to 9,000 rpm

If it is the same series it will work. If you are trying to put a series 5 cluster in a s4 you will have to cut and splice wires. Also I've heard the tach won't work correctly.

Series, not model determins the ease.
The 89-91 model gauge cluster will work in a 86-88 car, but will require almost complete re-wiring the gauge harness. Also the tach over rev will not work correctly.
And as a side note aurosting: unless you are using a aftermarket fuel controller, your "upgraded fuel system, larger injector" as listed in your signature will actually lower your top end HP, as the non turbo engines with stock ECU tend to run way too rich at high RPM anyway.
