Grounding

Okay, so in my on-going adventures of grounding, i fubared something today.

i was strickly following the "Grounding How-to" thread from the archives,.. in the gang plug for the boost sensor, the wires are confusing me.. and i might have grounded out something else thinking it was the ground, ..yes, i should have a volt-meter, but i don't.

What do the wires connect to? i have 5 in total,..
in the article, it says for an S4 86 (my year) it should be a brown wire, with black marks. Well on mine i have 3 brown wires and one black wire. The brown wire with the black stripe has a twin with it.. so 2 wires grounding it out? i have yet to read that anywhere. So i figured that the black was the ground since i had tried to ground out the brown with black wires before, and it did nothing. End result; it made a click when i turned the ignition to on.. as usual.. tried starting it, and all it did was crank. So, i go out and pull the end grounded to the strut tower bolts, and try starting it again, with nothing but cranking.
I've checked all of the fuses, checked wires, tried the un-flooding it, with no car starting still.

whats going on?
thanks for any info.

On a 86:
1. Black/White....12volts

2. Brown/White.....5volts ref voltage.

3. Brown/black......ground

4. Brown/Red.......output from the sensor to the ECU.

Brown/White means a brown wire with a white stripe on it. This wire must NEVER EVER be put to ground or you will KILL the ECU (personal opinion, observations, never done it myself).

If you had two brown/black wires coming out of the same socket, they were ground wires. Not to worry about grounding them.

If you grounded the black/white wire....you'd just blow a fuse. Most likely the one in the engine bay.

If you grounded the brown/red wire....I'm clueless what would happen.

If you have a meter....does the brown/white have 5volts on it????? Approx five volts? One volt does not count.

Does the black/white wire have 12volts? If not check the 30a fuse in the engine compartment.

The brown/red won't have much of anything on it. Disregard it for now.

If the brown/white has little or no voltage........check all the fuses in the engine compartment. This would be a very bad sign if there is nothing or just like one volt. I'd say whacked ECU. The device that feeds that wire also makes the injectors and ignitors work (my GUESS). No reference voltage....car no worky.

If I repeated myself...can't help it. Watching the telly.

i know for a fact that i did not ground out the brown/white wire..
i grounded the brown/black.. and tried the black/white the first time without reading on here, but reading from other sites..
And then i did the ECU ground from the directions.

But since i posted that yesterday.. the car will run now.. but, if i get the RPM's up to 5-6k and hold it, then engine will just shut down, and turn off with no hesitation or weird idle, nothing, just off.

Also, when i go to start it, it will start on the first time, but if i turn it off right away, and try starting it up again, it won't start, it just cranks... smells fairly gassy in the engine bay..
Could this be some major flooding? should i put in a fuel cut-off switch, and see how that goes?

Yeah make the fuel cutoff switch. But also go to your afm and make sure the connector (rectangular) is shoved on good. Maybe take it off then put it right back on. NO unscewing needed. Just pull it straight off then put it back on. There is a contact in there that makes the fuel pump circuit if the engine is running. It sounds like a flakey connection there.

well the fuel cut switch is installed .. and i thought it was fine until this morning..
i was up to about 6500RPM then it shut down on me again.. so i got fed up, let it cool down, and drove it to the only Rotary shop here, and instantly we found out it was something to do with the ignition, and then finally found out that the wiring to the trailing coil pack is fried.. but it seems like i had nothing to do with it. or very little at least.
So, its getting re-wired, and if that fails, then its gonna be new coil pack time.

thanks for your help Hailers,.. got msn? i know i will have more q's to ask.
