grooves on my irons? what's acceptable?

I have a 88' T2 that I am rebuilding currently and I noticed today that there are grooves on the irons where i assume the corner seal would ride. The grooves are bad enough that I can catch my fingernails in them. I know that on housings that would be the end of it but what about on irons? I'd like to salvage the engine as it seems to have been rebuilt recently (it has fd corner seal springs) and the only that was wrong was a split coolant seal (grooves are fine). I'll post pics of them tomorrow .

You need to get the factory service manual (AKA the FSM) or a Haynes manual. It has measurement for how much wear is allowable on the irons before they should be resurfaced or replaced.

If your fingernail actually catches and stops, then they need to be lapped. If you can just feel the groove with your fingernail, you'll need to measure as instructed in the manuals.
