grinding noises

this might sound retarded, but what do i know, i just fix computers. i have a 88 gxl and i maintain the hell out of it. i have no real mods other than a fidanza flywheel. anyways everytime i shift it gets kinda rough and when i hear the engine it sounds like its grinding or something....i bought the car some months back. but let me know if thats normal....thanks guys

Years ago I bought a cheap mechanics stethoscope.
It’s great for isolating noises.

Even a long screwdriver or a stick can be useful.
Hold it with a fist at the end and bring your ear to your fist.

Accessory bearings & belt idler bearings are common noise makers.
