Red face Got an S5 gxl, car was overheated and won't run. What to check for?

Ok guys,

as the title says. I could search but , and will but I want to post a thread about the deal anyways.

There is this guy down the street with an FC that has been sitting there for a few years and I have always seen it and he said he wanted to get it fixed and that it wasn't running. And it is sitting next to an FD he has that also isn't running.

It is one thing when you see an FC sitting around but when you see both an FC and FD you know the guy is one of us. So I went over and asked him about it and we talked. Now two years later he wants to get rid of it.

For $750 I get an s5 gxl, with brand new 17" rims and tires, a new tranny with a six puck clutch and it has a new radiator in it. The body is very clean, just faded paint. Of course I am broke as always but my old man is paying for it until I get my Pell Grant money.

So this is what happenned. His brother drove it and it started getting hot and instead of letting it cool down he drove it back home. He turned the car off and when he tried to crank it again it wouldnt start. He took the plugs out and there was water on the plugs. So I am thinking blown coolant seals. Will overheating blow the apex seals as well, or what is more likely to happen. I am just trying to gauge how hard it will be to rebuild.

If nothing is warped, you can get a soft seal kit and rebuild it for less than 200 bucks.

Sounds like it's worth a shot, like he ^ said, as long as the housings are o.k., but you'll only know when it's apart with feeler gauge in hand. That thing is worth it probably in parts alone.

Good luck!

It will rust up if you don't fix it soon.
My 87NA was running almost a year on the "barrs leak" treatment when I sold it.

HAHA!!! Holy shizzins!! I bought the car, brought it home, got a good battery in it, cleaned the terminals, wanted to try to crank it to see what was wrong with it and the damned thing was just flooded really bad!! Started right up!! I drove it up the street, around the corner and pulled back in the driveway. The brake disks are all rusted to hell and the pedal is stuck to the floor so I may change the master cylinder.

Here is a crappy pic.

Turns out it is also a GTU. Sweet. I am going to post a new thread.

Oh and BTW!! This just goes to tell you something.

The black car- I cannot lock the car because the drivers lock does not work and the passenger does, but the handle is broken, so to get in I need to climb in through the hatch after keeping it locked. Not one good handle.

The vert. - Last week drivers handle broke. Have to get in passenger door when top is up.

The GTU- Not a single good handle. Have to crawl through hatch just to get into the car.

Six door handles and only one is good. WTF
