Unhappy got a problem...maybe O2 sensor?

OK....

symptoms

start the car
car idles until it starts to warm up then dies as soon as the revs drop.
start car again
idles for about 3 seconds then dies
start car again and give it gas once its kicks over
dies as soon as i give it some gas..

hmmm

look under the bonnet....find a wire that has gone brittle and has broken off from a green connector.
This wire goes from a main wiring loom to a little green connector and then into some other thing (o2 sensor)located on the heat shield at the back of the turbo near the exhaust.

I tried to solder a new wire in there but the old one wouldn't take....it wouldn't join.....
I twisted the wires together and connected the other end to the contact on the green connector.

start car
car idles @ 2000rpm for about 4 secs then dies
start car then give a little gas
car dies as soon as I have given it gas.....

hmmm

check compression ...... still there....

hmmm...

confused......

any ideas?

Big vacuum leak. That's what it sounds like to me.
Check the vacuum hoses, and make susre none have popped off or cracked badly.
How long has the car been like this?

Or it could be an electrical problem of some sort... all the wires ae probably in the same condition that one is.

I'd check vacuum lines first though- ar maybe the intake manifold gasket..

OR

The AFM connector, or the AFM itself. unplugging it will make the car run as you described.

Check the computer for codes too.

What do you mean by "check codes" ?

I looked at the vacuum hoses and none appeared to be cracked/damaged/missing etc....

I believe it has something to do with the afm because I can hear the flap close off just before it dies.... the connector is on and I don't think its a dead afm....I am thinking that the sensor the wire was connected to maybe be telling the afm to close off cos its not connected.

can someone please explain what the cable to the O2 sensor looks like and what kind of cable it is....also where it goes to and what connectors it has on it..

and if you have a pic of an O2 sensor that would be very handy...

Cheers

on pre 1990 cars, the O2 sensor goes to a green connector that has latches on both sides, (the look like rectagles)
if this has broken from the harness, tear the harness cover back and re-attach.

if it brike from the o2 sensor....

GOOD

You needed a new on anyway.

Go buy a new BOSH universal O2 Sensor, strip and clamp the factory wire to the new o2 sensor, and cover the connection with the supplied shrink tubing.

Fixed.

Now, tune the car, using the TPS & Idle adjustments per the factory service manual.

voila.

Nice idle right at 750-800 RPM.
