Got a parts car!

Hello rx7 club,

Picked up a sweet s5 convertable to use as a parts car today. Shes pretty much fully complete and stock with few broken parts, except the engine. Seems like it has no compression in one of the housings. You have to floor it to move 10 feet then she lets go. Im going to be stripping it over the next couple weeks.

Does anyone know of any parts that would be upgrades to an s4 coupe? Im going to be taking the fenders and bumpers so far for sure. Also it has the sweet mirrors that have a hole in them. Any input is much appreciated!

Thanks!

Don't think of "upgrades", think "spares".
With that mindset, you want everything.

The alloy hood is valuable.
The fuel tank and pump could be better than what you have.
The windshield would fit and new replacements are hard to find.
Most of the body electrical could be used and I think the taillights can be relatively easily adapted.

All of the hardware (nuts, bolts, brackets and the like) can be used.

Although the S5 front control arms are actually a downgrade, they are a direct replacement and could be handy if you ever prong a curb.

I'd save as much stuff as space allows because it's always the obscure little widget that derails your project, not the big, obvious stuff.

Right on. Yeah that was a big reason for me to get it. Seems like alot of factory parts are expensive or not available. Thanks for the advice!

As clokker said, take everything you can. I'd pull the doors complete. I know it's a vert but so many of just about everything else in the door is the same. Grab the steering column and all switches in the car, the wiper motor and arms, etc...

Yes, the wheels are an upgrade if they are the original BBS wheels.

Also, you can replace the brittle S4 stereo surround and grille with the more durable S-5 parts.

I can't think of anything else that would be an actual upgrade unless your coupe has 4-lug wheels or a steel hood.

Nice, that is all very helpful. Once i get my house sold i was going to try and restore the bbs wheels that came on it. Theyre pretty sweet but gnarly lookin right now.

Didnt realize they had different hoods before so i was definitely swapping that too.

Thanks a bunch for the help!

That's not only very kind but quite fortuitous...I do need a part.
Specifically, the fuel tank bulkhead and the pigtail connector for the electrical.
That would be sweet.

Nice, the original wheels where actual BBS brand with "Mazda" rather than "BBS" written on the center caps. They are lighter than most of the "light" aftermarket streetable wheels you could mount on your car. New they cost about $500 each, so they are definitely worth restoring. Shops like this can provide the service:

Coupes may have steel or aluminum hoods. Check the hood of your coupe with a magnet first, as it may already have an aluminum hood. You may also want to check the convertible hood, as the original may have been replaced with a cheaper steel hood if the car was in an accident.

I just got a 91 vert and am in desperate need of a passenger side window regulator. Really want to be able to drive her, but until I get the window fixed I can't. Would you be interested in selling and shipping to VA?
