Got my first rx-7, opinions needed.

I just picked up my first rx-7, about a month ago. It's a 1991, not shure it it's a n/a, of fc, or whatever, nonturbo'd. It has 164000 miles, and about 60000 on a brand new engine from japan. The seatbelts were broken, but thakfully they were recalled, thanks mazda. There are a few miner things I need cleared up though.

1. The wiper switch only works on slow speed. I have been reading the forums for a little while, and already know how to fix that then, so that's out of the way.

2. The power antenna will not go up. When I bought it it went up, but when I got it, he took the radio, and I have installed a new kenwood kdc300. I'm shure I hooked it up properly, but I could check it.

3. When I got it, I hadn't gotten it up to redline. So when I was mine, I wanted to see "what she had," and it seemed to stop at like 5-6k rpm's, like it had no more horsepower/acceleration after that. I thought that was really wierd. So I changed the oil, and it was fixed, wierd huh?

4. When I go past 5-6k rpm's, it pops. The higher I go, the louder it is.

5. It came with a bra on it. I don't like them so much and I took it off only to find the front drivers side corner was crashed. A little of the metal on the fender was bent up, and plastic was all cracked, bummer.

5. When Cold, I realize the cold idle system makes it idle higher than normal until it warms up, and it's not good to run it over 3k rpm's until it's warmed up. But while it's cold, and even half of the time when it's warm, the check engine light comes on when I give mass acceleration. Anyone know why?

6. And the fenders have a little rust on them, and I wanted to get a body kit anyways, so.... I can't really find any nice ones for this car, all the nice ones are for the third generations. Could anyone point me to the nice ones for this car?

THanks...later

1 Icemark fixes them too.

2 Some stereos don't allow for the antenna to retract and raise. Might want to check if they are hooked up too.

3 That is not fixable by oil change lol maybe it was realy really dirty oil but you probably have another problem that is intermittant (sp?)

4 pops? thats normal

5 You can find replacement parts online, at junkyards, or on this very forum from other members. Check the forsale section

6 Don't rice it out. For gods sake.

2. The antenna is hooked up tomy stereo properly, guess it's just something for me to track down, something there must be faulty.
3. Yeah, I have no idea why that was.
4. Poping is normal? seriously?
6. No riceing, I like a slightly modified look. Like stock looking, but with a front bumber that allows more air to enter or something.

Stuck valve that got unstuck??

I was able to reduce this and get more power by adjusting my throtle plates and tps. BEWARE! I dont know what Im doing and I just got lucky with this tweak.

Look back a few days in the posts, I know I saw one on whats the best body kit that had lots of pictures and everything.

THanks...later
Enjoy your 7!!

welcome buuuuddy. i'm fairly new too and havn't YET rebuild a rotary so i know a few things but not by first hand experiance. If it's a 91 motor you could check to make sure 5/6 port things are doing their thing? i'm not 100% sure on this tho. and ya look back a page and there's an entire bodykit thread already

Your antenna wont go up with an aftermarket headunit unless you wire a relay in with it too. I'm not even sure how just something i read somewhere, I'd search the forum if i were you.

I just rembered another importaint something, and will add it to my first post also.
7. The locks don't lock. I lock my side, and the other side will lock automatically at the same time. But when I shut the door, they both unlock. Also wierd huh? I can't lock my baby up at all. Haven't seen anything about this around here yet...later

edit: guess I can only edit post before they are up 30 minutes, bummer...later

Is there an alarm (factory or aftermarket) at all on your car? That is really weird...maybe something with the CPU??? Can you shut the door, then turn the key the other way to lock the doors? I can do this with all my cars except the 86 benz cause the alarm goes off lol. Good luck man and welcome to the club!

on the antenna,i found that actually grounding and ungrounding the wire in the dash made the antenna go up and down.so i i put in a switch in my center console that grounds and ungrounds it,so i can manually take it up and down, and i can have the cd player on with no antanna, and then hit the switch for the radio,,neato.......anyone else ever done this?

If your doors are unlocking when you close them the most obvious problem, and I don't mean to insult you, but are you hold the door handle open as you close the door? This is a mazda after all and to reduce the chance of locking your keys in the car you must hold the door handle out as you close the door. This is true for all Mazda vehicles. If you are closing the door properly you have a problem with the door latches. You might need to remove the door panels and check out the hardware. Do you have auto locks? Besure to lube all the moving parts with lithium grease.

huh. I was unaware that you had to hold the handle open when closing the door, and yes, they are automatic locks. I'll try it, thanks...later

uhh, That did work to keep the doors lock, and activate the alarm. But My key didn't open either of the doors once locked, so I went in through the hatch and unlocked the doors, and the alard went off.

How do you turn it off?, besides disconnecting the ground from the battery...later

Uh... RX7's don't have valves...

Unless there's some other valve you're talking about that I'm not thinking of, the rotary engine has no valves

stereo antennae: the stock stereo antennae has a reverse grounding system. A stereo shop can actually make a really to bypass this problem for abot $20. All they have to do is oped up the sidewall by where the antennae is installed and put the relay in the ground wire, it just reverses the polarity. I had to do the same thing to mine. Or you can just put an aftermarket antennae in there and fix the problem all together ($50)

I have the popping myself when i let off the gas, that seems to be a given, if it happens when your hitting the accelerator, you probably have a pin hole in your exhaust or there could be a bad plug or wire too...
