Question Good repair/mod shops in Los Angeles area?

Just got my 7 and have heard of a couple of places I could go to for repairs and mods, but I was just wondering if any of you would know of any others or have an opinion on which'd be better.

So far I know of...
-Rotory Reliability in Orange County
-Mazdatrix near Long Beach

and I read a while back of a place called Tri-point really close to me, but I haven't heard of them recently. Does anybody know anything about Tri-point???

Thanks,

Kevin

hey...

the boys at tripoint are very very knowledgable...go there if you can afford it..haha

you can get the same service at rotary reliability for a more reasonable hit on the wallet.

tripoint is a great shop...in canoga park...they have done a few thousand dollars worth of work on my car....now I take it to rotary as I cant afford a thousand dollars to change the belts and brake pads on the front and front rotors...if ya hear what Im saying. (thats what they charged me when I was naieve)

but...they do an amazing job...if you want it done right...either will do...but rotary will warrantee their work.

Kevin,

If you haven't done already, check out the forum thread titled "Remove Plastic Undertray". Good discussion about dealing with engine overheating.

FYI, I've seen Rotary Engines with 400,000 miles and still going strong. So, attacking your overheating problem now is well worth it.

PM me if you need to know more shops that works on our cars around here in LA. Where are you at?..TRI POINT is very expensive. I've been there and spoke to the owner (MARK). They do alot of Rotary and BMW race cars. They know what they are doing but sometimes charge more than the dealer..hehehe
They are cool though. Let me know at FCTURBO2@hotmail.com

Thanks Jon. I'll look into doing those things to get lower temps soon. Radiator flush/check, thermistat check/replace, higher PSI rad cap.

FCTURBO2- I'm just outside the northwest corner of LA county along the 101 (ie Ventura county). One of the reasons I asked was that Canoga Park is only 15 minutes away from me. Do you know of any good shops closer to me than the ones I originally mentioned? I'm leaning towards Rotory Reliability so far, based on what I've heard. I'll email you tomorrow maybe if you don't post back to this thread.

Oh and yeah, I have a vert, so it's an NA.

You could also check out Mariah Motorsports in Santa Barbara. Same deal as Tri-Point, great shop but, not the cheapest. Give them a call though.

Additional question....

I've just discovered I will need to get my engine rebuilt a little sooner than I had expected. I guess I could take it to one of the shops I already know about. My new question then becomes...

Are any of these shops open on Saturdays???? cuz weekends are the only days I'd be able to drop off my car if it isn't nearby.

HOZZMANRX7- Does Nick work on Saturdays?

FCTURBO2- thanks for the email. I'm outta town this Sunday, but next Sunday maybe? It doesn't have to be in SFV though, anywhere in the northern part of the county'd be closer.

OK man. What ever is more convinient for yah. FYI a reman motor will run you around 2,300. I heard that most reman motors comes with new housings and stuff. Most economical is having somebody do the rebuild for you. Just buy new rotor housings, gaskets, and seals.

Kevin,

Nicks not open on Saturday. Best you could do is drop it off and slip a note under the door with your key and personal info so he can contact you.

If you can get another car to drive in the meantime, you've got decent mechanical reasoning, and you can twist a wrench, buy a rebuilt one and install yourself.

With apologies to Nick, I did that. Bought mine from Mazda Auto Recyling in Sacramento for $1,200 including shipping last Christmas. My first experience tearing down a EFI set up 13B, and really didn't have a problem. If you stay with it and start a Saturday morning, you should be able to get it in and running by the next day assuming you don't need to replace anything else in the process.

Alternatively, you can buy a J Spec one (used engine imported from Japan with about 50,000 miles on it) for around $700.

Sorry to hear bout that, dude.

Kevin,

Check your private messages. I might have a connection that can help you out with your engine woes.

Sorry I haven't posted back earlier guys. Been busy up in the bay area taking care of a few things and visiting cousins.

Anyways, I was surfing some last night and checked out Mazda recycling and Mazdatrix for rebuilt engines. Couldn't figure out how Mazdatrix pricing worked out with regard to the core deposit.... Seemed like they took your old engine and gave you a different one back? In any case, I was gonna ask where would be the best place to go to get a rebuild. Is going to a place that gives a warranty better than one that doesn't???

Hey, is a Jspec engine CA legal? And if I buy one for $700, I'll still have my old one that could be rebuilt anytime, right? That might be a good idea.

As far as putting in the rebuilt engine once I got it, I was thinking I could try it, but I've always been much better at taking stuff apart than putting it back together so I'd probably want to see how much more it'd run me to have that done for me as well.

And, while I'm at it, I was considering taking a day off and taking my car down to somebody, like Nick, and find out everything else that I may have a problem with. Still have to look into the radiator/thermostat issue. Might as well fix everything up at once.

Anything I'm missing here?

g'night,

Kevin
