A good reason why we should check our bearings

What up yall...

A couple of weeks ago I started hearing and feeling a grinding noise coming from my drivers front wheel. I got back and put it up on jackstands and noticed that my wheel was a lil wobbly and it had caused my caliper to bite into my rotor. I investigated furthere and concluded that my outer bearing became unseated, so I went ahead and reseated it, put it on and it was just like new.

The next day it happened again- this time it was worse, a helluva lot worse. I put her back on the jackstands again... I saw that the cage to the bearings was gones and they were rollin around themselves. Take a look at them rollin around again on the desk, lol.

That pic is after what I went through to get the damn hub off heres the hub...

Cool huh? Lol, look at the bottom part of the cage, now look at the race.

To top the little adventure off, the outer bearing was siezed to the damn spindle, a puller was unable to get the hub off, so I had to incorperate the trusty slide hammer. Seized outer bearing spindle, COME ON DOWN!!!!!...

The muthafuckin bearing wasnt movin for anybody, lol. It aint never budged.

So whats the lesson here? Jack your seven up ever so often and check your bearings, its a quick check that can save you time and money cuz now I gotta replace bearings, and a spindle., cuz of my neglet alone. It aint easy lookin for a spindle unlees you got RX7club on your side, lol. I wanted to put this out here for my brothers and sisters who wear the seven as I do, so you wont be stuck as I am. Thanks for your time.

Most likely incorrect torque on the spindle nut. on my FC every couple of months I had to jack it up and retorque using a pull scale and a torque wrench (the right way). The easy way to tell is that it feels like a bad wheel bearing when you put your hands on the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and wiggle back and forth.

that sucks....

from my experience more aggressive wheels or heavier wheels will put more stress on the wheel bearings(happens a lot with subarus that have the 5x100 bolt pattern)

those spacers coupled with whatever wheel and tire you were running most likley caused more stress and just weakend over time. not to mention driving on bad bearings risks the possibility of seizing and causing suspension and brake nightmares...

my budy just payed an 1100 dollar bill to get new bearings rotors and hubs due to seized bearings. OUCH!

(btw this is just experience with subarus) but im sure can apply to all cars.

I aint have these wheels and spacers more than 500 miles, lol. I had checked my passenger side and it had a lil wiggle ima check em tomorrow. This is definitely a unexpected and unique precaution to check. I will actually check the torques on the nut. Thats a good idea...

the FSM has a very specific procedure on how to torque the nut, then use the pull scale to set it to the point that it doesn't bind. There should also be a cotter pin a lock cap.

well I re-torqued my passenger side, added more grease, and its just like new. While my car cant do anything untill i get my spindle (thanks again spooledupracing) I took all my wheels off and scrubbed out my wheel wells. Lemme tell you, I think that was the first time in years its been scrubbed. I weighed the **** and gunk and it was just over 2.5 lbs. I also had more that was on the rags, but didnt weigh that. I couldnt believe it. Plus it looks really good too...

this has happen to me going 90 on the freeway coming back from LA!!! the most important thing that i learned from this checking the aligntment of the spindle! if is even bent slightly it will grind away your bearings to the point until your driving with only the hub pin!!

why this could have happen to me was because of potholes... i remember hitting a pothole a couple months before this happen, with a strong enough force these FC spindles can definitely get bent up.
