Talking A good problem to have.

Hey guys,

Since Santiago is out of the picture now (I always asked him for help whenever something came up) i'm going to ask your guy's advice.

I have approximatly $900 to spend on my car (S5 TII). I can't decide what to buy. As it stands, I'm considering getting upgraded suspention (i'm building a track car). Here's a question: what suspention would you recommend I get? Whats the best bang for the buck?

Here are the things I have on a shopping list I assembled, but I really don't have them in any kind of order:

Injectors (680cc/min)
RP Competition Fuel Pump
SX Fuel Pressure Regulator
ULTRA 8mm Silicone Ignition Wires
K2RD Radiator

Microtech LTX8 Standalone ECU
Bosch Coil
Laptor Adaptor

I'm setting a goal for 350whp right now.

My current mods:

• <8,000 miles on rebuild
• Custom 3'' CAI (Santiago's design)
• 3'' Exhaust (dp->muffler)
• New Flywheel
• Stage 2 clutch
• New Alternator
• HKS B.O.V.
• FCD
• Autometer Boost and Water Temp gauges.

Summary: I want to know the best thing to get with a $900 budget after my mod list.

Thanks.

Andrew

What happened to Santiago?

One annoying thing about working on cars is that whenever you upgrade one system, usually another needs to be upgraded as well. In this case by adding more horsepower -and I'm assuming you're on your stock shocks/struts/springs and what not- you're also going to want to upgrade your suspension. Suspension can have a decent amount of influence on your launch times, which in turn affects your overall 1/4 mile time. If you're an AutoX guy, well.. I guess you aren't because you would get suspension pretty quickly if you were. If you're just a normal driver, that likes to have a fast, well handling car. Then I would say it's time to work on suspension. Crap, I'd say it's time to work on suspension no matter what kind of driver you are. I know I for one have shocks that have been shot to hell.
I haven't really looked into new shocks yet, but I'm sure some of the other guys could help you. OR I'm pretty sure tirerack.com covers suspension as well.
I've heard Walbro fuel pumps are whats common on these boards, I'm not too sure about RP, haven't looked into them.
From what I can tell, it looks like you're lookin at an FMIC pretty soon, boost controller, and so on. Maybe a new turbo as well. Intake would be good.
Is your rebuild ported?
Basically this is what I'm saying: Do your suspension and supporting mods now (support = radiator, things like that) so you have an even better base than what you have now, to work off of.

And as usual, don't just take my word for it, if the majority disagrees with me, go with them. I don't claim to be a professional.

Ya, like I said, i've been needing to work on suspention.

I already have the CAI (cold air intake) from santiago, so thats really no problem. I bought the car right after the guy rebuilt it. I am almost posotive that it isn't ported.

I have stock everything besides the mods I listed. I'm asking whats the best suspention to get for $900 or less? Or can I save a little bit more and get $1000 suspention. I'm looking for something that will serve me well on the track.

Thanks again.

According to tirerack.com you can get KYB AGX struts for about 100 each. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

What happened to Santiago, you said he was out of the picture?

In order of importance

1. DTSS Rear steer eliminators
2. Energy or Prothane Suspension Bushings
3. KYB AGX Struts/Elbach Springs
4. Strut tower bar.
5. Sway bars
6. Camber link

That should get you started....

Okay, thanks for the help thus far. I know very little about suspention (mainly the vocabulary part) so I hope I don't tick any off you off with my massive amounts of ignorance.

Questions:

1.) Should I consider the Racing Beat 1986-92 RX-7 Suspension Package?
2.) My car is also a daily driver. My friend says that having a sway bar is unsafe for daily driving. If he is right, why?
3.) Where can I find the 'DTSS Rear steer elimintaors' and what do they do?
4.) What are Energy or Prothane Suspention Bushings, and where can I find them?
5.) What is a Camber link, and where can I get it?
6.) Racing beat says: "If your RX-7 has logged many miles (75,000+) on those tired old shocks, now may be the time to consider replacing them with a new set of performance shocks. We suggest either KONI or Tokico shocks as suitable replacements. " Should I follow their advice?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Anyways, bump. I'd appreiate it if you answered my questions from my previous post.

I am thinking about getting the Tokico IILLUMINA's. Good idea?

Thanks.

Racing Beat knows what they are talking about. The KYB AGX's are good too. I don't know much else about the questions you asked.
Thanks for linking me.

You don't need to answer every question.. Just answer the ones you know.

Thanks.

Okay.. Since nobody cares to respond, I'll ask a simpler question.

I know it's obvious, but i'd like to make sure of these things before I go and spend $1000:

1.) I want to buy the Tokico Illuminas. I'd buy a Front Right, Front left and 2 Rear struts, right?

2.) I also want to get the Racing Beat Coil Springs. I'd buy 2 front coil and 2 rear coil springs, correct?

3.) Will these new parts perfectly replace the stock struts and springs? Will my calipers, rotors and everything else still work okay? Or will I have to buy things so that everything will fit together correctly?

Thank you for your help so far, but I'm really anxious to begin work on my car.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. They are direct replacement for stock parts. All other stock equipment will still fit and function correctly.

You will need considerably more than 680cc/min secondaries to achieve 350rwhp. You need a total of ~3100cc/min, so 1000+cc/min secondaries (with stock primaries) will be required.

I had this on my list, but I failed to mention it:

(primary)2 Crown Injector(680cc/min)
(secondary)2 Bosch Top Feed Injector(1600cc/min)

That okay? Or overkill?

Thanks, NZ (and theonly).

I am by no means an expert, but I think that may be slightly overkill.

Andrew, I think a LOT more reading is required on your part. Suspension upgrades are a serious matter since your choices will directly affect how the car drives. Suspension is also a personal taste, depending on how you drive and how well you can drive.

I've tried to answer your questions below, but I'm new to the FC3S chassis so most of my comments are based on suspension tuning of the Nissan S13 chassis which is a similar design, but not nearly as advanced.

Keep in mind, when doing suspension upgrades you are eliminating a lot of the compromises that the engineers made in designing the suspension for mass consumption (read clueless people who don't know how to drive well) . You will be increasing it's capabilites, but you will also require a lot more driving skill to handle the new capabilites and limits. You can turn this car into one amazing cornering machine, but be aware that it will become less forgiving with mistakes.

The mods you are looking at will change the car's handling character, so be prepared to relearn how the car drives, I suggest several hours in an empty parking lot where you can lose control but not hit anything to get used to the new capabilites after they're installed.

1.) Should I consider the Racing Beat 1986-92 RX-7 Suspension Package?
Yes, it's a good deal for what you get and they are high quality products.

2.) My car is also a daily driver. My friend says that having a sway bar is unsafe for daily driving. If he is right, why?
No he is not right, you have sway bars on the car now. Sway bars help keep the car level during cornering and keep the tires in better contact with the road. When upgrading your sway bars, buy a front and rear set that are designed to work together and keep the car neutral.

3.) Where can I find the 'DTSS Rear steer elimintaors' and what do they do?
Racing Beat offers them too. What they do is make your car more predictable when cornering at the limit. Mazda designed the rear suspension to change geometry in corner to eliminate understeer. For people who drift or race on circuits, this can make the car a little bit unpredictable when at the limit. The system works pretty well for your average driver, so if they're not worn, then I wouldn't replace them. If you plan to replace them, consider stock bushings since the eliminator bushings will increase oversteer.

4.) What are Energy or Prothane Suspention Bushings, and where can I find them?
Most places online that carry aftermarket parts for cars will have these. These are polyurathane upgraded bushings. The stock bushings in most cars are rubber to keep down cost, and to reduce ride harshness for the average driver. Rubber compresses and breaks down over time. Polyurathane still has some give to it, but doesn't compress near as much. This will "tighten up" your car at the expense of ride quality.

5.) What is a Camber link, and where can I get it?
A camber link is a way of adjusting the geometry of the suspension to dial in more or less camber. These are typically used to put the suspension back to the stock specs for tire contact when the car is lowered on aftermarket springs.

6.) Racing beat says: "If your RX-7 has logged many miles (75,000+) on those tired old shocks, now may be the time to consider replacing them with a new set of performance shocks. We suggest either KONI or Tokico shocks as suitable replacements. " Should I follow their advice?
Yes!!! Especially if you go with different springs. Tired old shocks typically last about a week with upgraded or lowering springs. If they recommend Koni or Tokico then they would be a good choice to consider, since they have probably developed the springs to work in conjunction with those particular shocks.

Definately don't just take our word on it, do some research and learn about the suspension in the car and what it does. What we may say is good might not suit your goals or driving style. There's a wealth of knowledge out there, do some reading, then come back and look at our advice again.

Thanks alot DoriftWolf. That helped a ton.

Anyway, I talked with a friend for a few hours last night about this. Once we were done, we decided I'm going to get KONI shocks with RB springs, first. Thats about $900 when its all said and done, so i'm right on budget.

After that I'm going to buy the RB sway bars and install them. I have a front tower brace. Falken Azenis will follow. So, when i'm done with all of the above i'm going to start working on the engine again.

Thanks a ton for all your help!

-Andrew
