Going redneck I think.....

I am considering straight piping my 87....I have the rb headers and full 2.5 all the way back, but i sold the mufflers and I really don't have the money for new ones right now because i just paid for school....I was thinking of going 2-12" glass pacs to a set of 3.5 inch rolled tips...anyone gone this route? Will it still sound ok or like crap? I like loud so that isn't the issue I still want the car to sound good....

thanks..

The exhaust heat will burn glass packs up.

Before trying this, do the following:

Go outside.
Unbolt everything from the headers back.
Drive around for 15 minutes.

This is EXACTLY how loud/raspy your car is going to sound after your glass packs melt in a few days/weeks. I cringe at the thought of daily driving something like that. Trust me, you don't want to do this.

Oh, you're running a cat? Didn't see that. Dude, lemme tell you. When I bought my GTUs, it has the stock cat, RB headers, and a Rotary Performance catback. That catback might as well have been straight pipes. I had to drive it 1,100 miles for 19 hours from Boulder, CO to Sacramento, CA. I wish that upon NO ONE. I made it a little less than 300 miles before earplugs became an emergency priority(burger king napkins wadded up my ears wasn't cutting it). My 3" open SINGLE turboback exhaust with RB presilencer was quieter than the GTUs was when I got it. Just get some borla cannisters, they're cheap, quiet it down a good bit, and sound great. You won't regret it.

If you do this, you'll end up torching your car. Don't even think about trying that.

Bullshit, I've done it lots of times. Unless you have a dangling fuel line right by your exhaust (you shouldnt) you won't have any problem.

You are talking aboput running a open pipe with no mufflers. This is stupid (safety is fine) but the noise will just be stupid levels... forget about it, you don;t need a sound file. You wont even be able to hear yourself think, lawnmower? no ... try an Alcohol funny car for a better comparison. Just do it right with a propper rotary exhaust system or leave it how it is till you can do it right. Strait pipe is not even an option, trust me.

it sounds like ****, I had knockoff glasspacks on my 87... and we pulled the cats off... and just like they're saying.. they melt, It sounds damn good for about 200 miles... then they're gone, and it sounds like a retarded bumble bee in a coke can after smokin a whole lot of coke... it's horrible man. I went and cut the exhaust off and just straight piped it. It's 2-1/2" all the way back. Put tips on it to silence it a lil, and to keep the black **** off of the back of the car.

I wouldn't recomend it, and if you do decide to do it.. and your car does catch on fire... videotape it.

heres what the sound file would sound like

BAHAHAHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAABURRMMMM RRAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
POP! POP! POP!

Kinda reminds me of a 2 stroke 125 motorcycle...
not how you want a car to sound.

Rpeck has the right idea.

Here is a vid for you guys. This is pretty much the same thing, but no manifold either. The force is similar to a topfuel car. I have a kerosene heater about 30 foot across the room when this vid was taken, and the force of the engine put the flame out in the heater.

Give this about 10 minutes, then try.

No, not really. The forces are pretty focused really...they go straight out. There is some heat generated to the manifolds and wiring, but no more than what a hot exhaust mani. does.

hahahha, my NA has a Streetport and for exhaust I am running the RB header to straight pipe back to a single Magnaflow straight through SS packed muffler. Let me tell you its forkin LOUD! But it sounds awesome in the high rpm. It is a little annoying for cruising around with and going past cops is retarded. But when really driving hard its sexy.

I drove my old FB for about 40min with it strait off the header when I lost the exhuast on the expressway. It was so loud it wasn't fun, plus the backfires get annoying. And having no backpressure doesn't make ur car run to great from a stop.
