Walk the course. Pay attention to what more experienced people say. Clean all the loose crap out of your car before you go. Make sure you have a proper battery tiedown. Drive slow to go fast

slow down.

The hardest thing, I think, for new auto-xers is the idea that to be fast, you must first slow it down. You'll rush into corners way too fast, only to end up spinning, or having to brake mid corner, scrub speed, etc.. Get the car slowed down for the corner, get turned in, and get back on the gas..

Hook up with someone in another class, and ask them for a ride.. Especially during a run group before yours. Watch how they take corners (try to get a RWD car to ride along with). Ask a few people, they usually don't mind.

empty your car before you go, and bring sunblock, a chair to sit in, and some water.. If you don't have a helmet already, they probably have loaners, but always best to have your own.

Add air to your tires, I usually run 30psi on the street, but bump it to 36-38 for the auto-x (street tires obviously).. after you've done this a few times, experiment with pressures, see what works for you.

I know I'm forgetting things, but there are two aspects to high performance driving.
1) being able to control your car at the hairy edge of traction/stability/performance.
2) recognizing the right line to drive and thinking/looking ahead enough to make sure you are smoothly on that line.

of the two, most novices think #1 is more important, but #2 is pretty much where you'll find all the time on the course.

Be smooth. Look ahead. Slow down. Make sure your car is mechanically sound and all loose items. Leave the ego at home. HAVE FUN!

Walk the course at least 3-4 times. Also, drawing the course is very helpful! Do it on graph paper which makes it easier.

It is a ton of fun. Also, look foward and not right in front of the car. You want to look foward! You may need to say this out loud. As you pass through one turn you should already be looking to the next turn.

relax. my first time out i was nervous as hell. but just take it easy and be as smooth as possible. ask the people there for help, most of them are really cool and will help you if they can, but don't bother them. if they're in deep thought, wait or go somewhere else. they're racing too. sometimes you can also look up the course map on the internet if scca runs it, that way you have an idea of what it looks like. good luck, have fun.
