going 70 and then....

ok here i am today on this nice sunny day and going about 70 and this nissan 240 comes up to me aside and want to go at it. so we go at it. but the funny thing is i go no where my car had no gear left. i punched it and the car accelerated but didnt accelerate fast , like it had no gear left. so needless to say i didnt give him a very good run. same thing happened not to long ago when i ran against my buddie in a hundai accent. he stayed alongside with me.
i have a 87 N/a (automatic) with a new engine in it or rebuilt. just go the vehicle this past fall. no mods all i have is a cone filter and two mufflers put on. to me i think i should ve pulled away from him.he had two peps in the car as well as junk in eth car . now im sure some of you may say check the ports well i dont even know what they look like to any help on that would be nice. i just assume therse cars where ment to go 140 and to me right now it seems like she cant get close. let me know thanks
andy

yea i think its just the fact that its an auto.. and the rear in an auto is a 3.90 as apposed to the 5spd which has a 4.10 so it gets a little better acceleration. but ditch the auto and youll do a hell of alot better.
