There's not much chance of getting the engine apart without need all the intake and exhaust gaskets.

I just did mine and I spent a lot of time scraping and sanding off pieces of each (they all tore while I was taking the engine apart) before puting it back together.

The Atkins rebuild kit cost me around $1000 but then there was other stuff I needed on top of that such as:

- pilot bearing seal (~$3)
- new studs and nuts for the manifold (you'll need to torch these off)
- I broke the oil pressure sender off while I was lifting it out so I had to drill what was left in the iron out and bought a used one
- I had dropped an Apex seal which ruined 1 rotor and housing so I bought 2 new housings and 2 matching used rotors (big bucks)
- one engine mount was torn so I bought 2 new ones
- my oil cooler lines were well aged so I bought an almost brand new pair of Ebay
- new plugs
- new ignition wires (they were still the originals)
- new oxygen sensor (might as well while it's out and easy to get at)
- I changed the water pump while I had it out - it was only $70 and it's not worth what it'll cost you in time and coolant later if you have to tear the pump back out later when it's back in the car.

There's also the costs of new coolant, oil, cleaners, I figured I might as well paint the irons while I had them out, I cleaned the engine bay with Simple Green , and I painted a couple of areas in the engine bay that didn't have much paint on them from the factory to clean it up and protect it.

It all adds up to a lot of bucks but it turned out beautiful and I know what I have under the hood now.

Besides, try to buy a newer car with the same kind of performance as an RX for that kind of money.

and luckily you dont need any specialty tools if you have torque wrenches and an impact gun. And clean the parts like you will be eating off of them, also if you are the kind of person that forgets to tighten bolts sometimes buy a paint marker and mark the bolts after you tighten them. buy a boq of baggies and put the small bolts and bits in them and mark each bag to tell you whats in them.


the fsm is your friend, also buy a haynes manual if you dont have one. i bought the atkins rebuild dvd and it helped alot. there are other videos also that are very helpfull

+1 to that. I have two things to say, if you have any chance/means to rebuild it do it. Its a fantastic car that just needs a little love. If you replace all the seals now there would be less chance of having to take it apart again, plus there is a greater chance of being able to reuse your irons/housings/rotors if it didn't have an apex seal failure.

If my 7 has taught me anything its to do everything the right way the first time =P. Also like someone else said there is rebuild dvds that can be had for around 15-20 bucks that are an excellent guide to helping you rebuild your motor. I personally have as Rotary Aviation dvd on me and I'd say it would be a worth while investment!
