Getting ready to replace a rear wheel bearing, any tips?

My rear wheel bearing is starting to howl pretty bad, so it's time to dig in and replace it.

I read the procedure in the FSM, but just wanted to see if you guys have any good tips you can share with me to make the job easier or some warnings of what to avoid. There are a couple of quick questions I need answered as well.

For one, what size nut is it on the hub? It's too big for anything I have and I think I read while searching that it's a 1 1/4" but I'm not quite sure.

The other big head scratcher is how should I get the old race pushed out and how should I push it back in. I was thinking of maybe a machine shop or something, but I'm not sure what they'd charge for something like that, or if it's even something they'd do.

Thanks for any tips you guys can give me!

I'd still feel more comfortable having a machine shop or a pro push those in myself though, but I don't know what kind of place would do that kinda thing (I'm gonna call around later if I get the time). I have read before that if you don't press them in with equal pressure on all sides you risk distorting the bearing and it will fail prematurly.

i used a 32 mm but 1 1/4 is almost exactly the same. i think auto zone might actually have the size. dont autozones have a press too? i thought i read they did and thats where other people took their bearings too but im not sure. and as far as not getting the bearing in straight...you have to be retarded not to get it right. it basically goes in straight by itself making it hard to make it crooked. so unless you cant see that something is crooked, dont worry about it.

My car is at the shop having the right bearing done and they just called saying they cant get it out and they are taking it to a machine shop, the guy mentioned that they hub/spindle whatever he called it, may break. Whats the possibility of this?

sorry. thats one thing i forgot to put on my thread, how to get the bearing out. i used the vice, heat, hammer, and other misc. parts (pipes...w/e) for pushing the bearing out. its not that hard and im sure your shop could just get it with some heat. but if they do take it to the machine shop to get it hydrolic pressed out, i dout they will "break" the hub.
