Gears, Gears, Gears!

has any body swapped the ring and pinion out in their car? I'm looking for a set that would change my top speed from like 170 (t2 trans with t2 diff) to something like 125-130.

What TII tranny are you using?
I am using a Jspec with a 4.1 turbo rearend with a torsen.
Here are my gear ratio and speeds.

1000 5 9 13 17 22
2000 10 17 25 35 43
3000 15 26 38 52 65
4000 20 35 50 70 87
5000 25 43 63 87 109
6000 30 52 75 104 130
7000 35 60 88 122 152
8000 40 69 100 139 174

After redlining 4th (8000rpm), I drop back to 6500rpm where my power band is with the Jspec tranny. If you have a US-spec tranny, might want to change to a jspec. You'll save alot of money over changing ring and pinion.

S4 TII 5th = 0.76
S5 TII 5th = 0.71
Jspec = 0.801

Have fun,
Derek.

There are 4.30 rear diff sets available.
Lots in Japan, but you need to special order new in the U.S.
Use the .762 5th gear from an S4 Turbo II trans, and you got a 150mph top speed - redline 7kRPM in 5th gear.

Why you want to gear it any shorter?
This will make 1st gear basically useless!

You dont have to special order the 4.3, the newer 6-speed miatas come with a torsen 4.3. Just have a look around some miata classifieds. Its going to be expensive though, those things run around 600-800 used!

The Miata uses the NA size ring and pinion. The TII ring and pinion is larger.

If we're talking about NA's, the 1989 - 1990 "GTUs" comes with a 4.3 rear STOCK.
I think we're talking about Turbo II's?
Which MrBob 86 mentioned runs different parts which are swappable with the NA's.

i have a stock NA diff 4.1 gears. it is lsd. which is ironic, since it only a gtu. But I run a s4 t2 trans. the gears are spaced apart properly, just too damn long. I can hit almost 140mph in 4th gear, which is ridiculous. so I figured why not swap out diff gears so i can actually put power to the wheel in all 5 gears.so whats the 4.3 gears like? my guess is they are a very minute improvement in acceleration over the 4.1's I think a 5.0 or 4.8 would be best for a good combo of usable power and decent top speed.
