Gauges wont light up

hi, ok, heres the thing, you start the car (at night naturally) and you flip up the lights, and all the other lights go on, its just the gauges wont. they worked at one time, and i checked all the fuses. in the center panel, by the stereo, their was a little like, brown plastic thing attatched with 2 wires, i think it was supposed to hold a little lightbulb or something , and i cut this brown thing off, to use the ground for some neon in the interior, and i tapes off the positive end. WTF would that do?? help me, im blinded at night.

From FAQ at top of page:

My dash lights don't work
Did you check the dimmer control??? If you did and they still don't work the light switch connections may have burnt out. Check the back of the light switch.

Common problem. New switch/connection needed.

put it back to stock, use somewhere in the fuse box to power the neon and ground it to the body. one of the screws/bolts that holds the dash in or something will work just fine for this purpose.
