gauge cluster electrical problem.

so heres the deal. there is a two pin plug from my ignition that every time i turn the car off i have to reach underneath and unplug for my gauges and idiot cluster to turn off. been like that for as long as ive had the car. Any ideas why it does this and how i can fix it or find the short somewhere.

Thanks for any help.

Does this plug have one BLACK/WHITE wire and one pure BLACK wire?

I'm talking the color of the wires in the chassis front HARNESS, NOT the igniton switch pigtail wires.

IF this is the case, then the igniton switch itself is bad internally. What is happening, is the switch itself even when off, is connecting the two wires I just mentioned above.

The BLACK is from the battery and has 12vdc all the time. You turn the ignition switch to ON or START, and the switch makes a circuit b/t the black and black/white wires. That act sends batt voltage to the row of fuses labled IG1, in the interior fuse box. That row of fuses now powers the items you listed.

So it has to be a contact inside the igniton switch that is *MADE* all the time. For unknown reasons.

The ignition switch is not that difficult to remove. It's held in with one screw. You do not have to replace the key cylinder etc. Just undo that one screw on the left side of the key cylinder and unplug the wire connectors. Now cost is another thing. I know not what they cost.

that makes alot of sense about the switch because also when i turn the key all the way to start it kills the power to everything so i have to bring it back to a sweet spot to get the car to start. well guess i better start looking for a new ignition luckily my buddy just picked up a parts car so hopefully i can fix this tomorrow. Thanks man check one problem off the list.

And it was linked to the brake pedal as well i belive. i have no idea.

The colors for the front harness plugs don't match the wiring diagrams.

One plug has two wires. One pure black and the other black/white.

Another plug has two wires. One is Black with a Red stripe and the other wire a pure Blue wire.

This does not match the colors you mention. I don't get it.

The ignition switch pigtail runs from the ignition fwd about a foot where it mates with the Front harness plugs. Are these the wires you talk of????????? That's what I'm talking about.

Then theres one wire by itself and it's Black/Red. Goes to the starter circuit.

See the fuse box attached? See the Meter fuse. That fuse and the other fuses on that row of fuses, only get powered up if the key is to ON or better.

The Black/White wire is the one that sends power to them from the igniton switch. Look again at the Black/White wire along side the pure Black wire in the two wire connector. When the key is put to ON, the contacts in the switch connect the pure black wire to the Black/White wire and power the METER fuse in the fuse box.

Your wire colors don't match the book. I've no idea why not. But I do agree that since you replaced the igniton switch......it ain't the switch. But I can't figure out why the problem exists BECAUSE your wire colors don't match the book NOR any of my cars ( I really need to go take another look at 'em).

I'll mull it over and look at my car tomorrow to try to see what's up.

Two of the three ignition switch plugs, are shown in the attached picture. The jpg is from another day...another problem. I do not show the third plug here. What I'm pointing out, is, is the black with black/white plug and the single black/red plug.

Why is yours different? Are you looking at another place?

Even the series five wires are Almost the same as series four. The exception is the single plugs wire.

I've been talking Ignition Switch harness plugs. Your talking about OTHER plugs. What I suspect you have, is the wrong two plugs connected together. One I think is for the ignition key cylinder light and you have it connected to the clutch???? switches plug. Later. Not parts required if I'm right.

Just disconnet those two connectors. If you do that, will the car start? Will the gauges work with those two plugs disconnected?
