Gasket leak-big or little job?

I had a friend of mine who knows a lot of about cars(piston engines at least) take a look at my 91 rx-7, and he said he saw a leak in the gasket and that there was a steering support or something in the way. Anyways, is the a normal job that me and him could do, or am i going to have to bring it to a mechanic?

my friend completely overhualed his 95 mustang engine himself to show you his knowledge of cars. thanks.

Exactly, what the hell is he talking about? There are so many gaskets on these cars. Get more info. And if it's a gasket, you shouldn't need a mechanic.

sorry bout that, i always leave off words when i'm typing.....retarded.....it's an oil pan gasket. it doesn't look like it'll be hard to fix, just the getting to it part. there's a steering column support or something kind of in the way.

Your engine mount goes thru the oilpan. It is a fairly difficult job. I believe what you are calling the "steering column support" is the steering rack or maybe the engine mount. Your spelling is very good, so I don't think you are retarded!

I just did it a few days ago. Its not too hard at all. You just need to get it up on stands, undo all of the bolts which is a pain as there are I think about 25 of them... The engine needs to get jacked up a little too so that you can take off that engine mount, then it should just drop down. Mine has manual steering so I'm not sure if your car has anything else in the way or not.
